Testing reactivity of primary, secondary, tertiary compounds
- Three test tubes are set up containing three bromobutanes from primary to tertiary with 1 cm3 of ethanol as sovlent , then add 1cm3 of silver nitrrate solution and shake the tubes. Tertiary halogenoalkane is the fastest to turn cloudy.
- Preparation of halogenoalkane:
- Test for Group 7
- Unreactive Nichrome/platinum wire is dipped into the sample of mixture of HCl and salt (Concentrated HCl is used because chlorides are soluble and volatile) and hold the coated wire in a hot blue bunsen flame
- Methyl orange indicator goes from yellow alkali to red in acid - orange end point | phenolphthalein from pink to colourless in acid
