The Duchess of House Jacinthe has fallen ill and cannot assist the family any longer. Her two identical sons, Jacques and Francois, who share the qualities needed to become the next duke, develop a rivalry after learning that only one of them gets to inherit the house. Jacinthe arranges an advantageous marriage contract with the daughter of Lord Jonquille, Charlotte, and sets the twins into a competition in which whoever wins Charlotte's love inherits the house. At a ball, the twins meet Charlotte, and Francois discovers that she is the woman whom Jacques has been madly in love with since childhood, so he plans to manipulate Charlotte and win her heart before his brother does. Francois invites Charlotte over to the Jacinthe Mansion the next day to seduce her, but learns that she also has feelings for Jacques. Overwhelmed and frustrated, Francois forces himself on Charlotte and threatens her that he will ruin Jacques and her older sister, Margaritaâs, lives if she rejects him.
The next day, Jacques ends up learning that Charlotte had chosen to marry Francois and eventually discovers his brotherâs deed. Jacques murders Francois and steals his identity, claiming to be Francois to hide his crime. Duchess Jacinthe then passes away on the day of Francoisâ funeral in grief, and Jacques ends up becoming the duke of the house. Charlotte, who ends up distraught by the false death of Jacques, blames herself and gets into a mental breakdown, so she isolates herself in her new residence at the Jacinthe Manor. She then finds Jacquesâ secret room where all the portraits of her are stored and discovers Jacquesâs obsession with her, eventually realizing his crime. Charlotte attempts to escape but gets caught and is drugged unconscious by Jacques. She then has a nightmare about Jacquesâ crime, causing her to become terrified of him. Charlotte attempts to commit suicide by poisoning herself until she is stopped by Jacques, who tells her that he will kill himself in her place, admitting his sins. Jacques commits suicide after setting the Jacinthe Mansion on fire, and Charlotte prays for the family's eternal rest in Margaritaâs arms.
