“What if some people really deserve punishments? What if they’re truly evil with no excuse to ever being innocent? Well, isn’t it right to give those kind of people a taste of their own medicine?”

Martin is the antagonist in Ageha in Wonderland. He temporarily works as a bartender in the Party Place. However, this is all to cover for his true mission. He was assigned to investigate and uncover the secrets of the Party Place and Pierrot’s background and do whatever it takes to achieve it.

History

Martin, initially named Kyong Hyun, was abandoned after his father discovered that he was the result of an affair. He was sent to Miss Blissful's Orphanage where children were harshly trained to prepare for adulthood to become worthy of affluent adoption, thus Hyun was exposed to adultery and became the victim of a pedophilic caretaker, often raped and sexually assaulted.

One night, Hyun’s abuser was on the verge of death due to a fatal injury that he caused with a glass shard to defend himself from being raped. Despite the abuser’s desperate cries, he simply watched as his abuser slowly died of blood-loss while he spent the entire time wondering if he'd call for help or not since killing the caretaker would save himself and the other children from the abuse, but it is not just even for a minor.

Since then, he was released from court due to his young age and began to wonder what is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ and applied this concept into his character until it affected him mentally. Hyun was eventually adopted by the wealthy German Liebert Family and his name was changed to ‘Martin Liebert’. When he turned 18 years old, he began working as a private investigator in WCPD on his foster parents’ demand.

As his mentality grew more unstable to the point of developing his sadistic behavior despite his perfect facade, Martin swore that he would kill himself once he turned 20 years old, the age where he’s considered a true adult.

Personality

Martin is a very charming and jolly young man who always wears a bright smile on his face wherever he goes. He is very sociable and talkative as he would greet his peers, even strangers, with confidence. He always appears in high spirits and a good mood, and as an adult, he is independent. While seemingly approachable, Martin uses his this facade to manipulate others, hiding his nature as a cunning and sadist. As shown through his enjoyment of questionable things, like seeing criminals get punished, Martin is mentally unstable. He also greatly values justice and relies on the law to determine someone’s life.

Even though Martin may not act like it, he has an extremely sensitive heart. He struggles to recognize his morals which can turn him illogical and stupid, and even makes excuses for his own actions. He also hides a very childish side of himself, such as throwing tantrums whenever he loses and cries very easily, as a result of being stripped away from his childhood. His trauma from sexual assault is also shown through his fear of being touched. This childish side of him can also make him somewhat cowardly and impatient. Martin is also shown to have suicidal tendencies, such as his determination to commit suicide once he turns 20.

Appearance

Physical

Martin has short and wavy ivory hair and olive-green eyes. His harlequin marks on his cheeks are black and tear-shaped. He has aegyo sal, which are pockets of fat under his eyes. These tear-shaped patterns may symbolize his crybaby personality.

Outfit

Martin wears a white shirt with his sleeves neatly rolled, a black vest with thin white stripes, black trousers and oxford-style shoes, and brown gloves. Hidden in his vest contains pockets of chlorine and ‘awaking’ drugs. In casual times, Martin wears clothing inspired by Korean street fashion.

Skills & Abilities

Movie in Mind

Martin is highly alert to his surroundings. In contrast to making his customers drunk and forgetful, Martin can remember every single word and action of his customers. He can remember past events vividly as if he were simply rewatching a movie in his head.

Relationships

Ageha

Since their first meeting, Ageha has been very suspicious of Martin and doesn’t get easily fooled by his manipulative and convincing acting, which the latter is very impressed with, considering her young age. She knows that Martin has motives to harm the Clowns so she is defensive against him, but it is unclear to her of what he intends to do and she doesn’t have evidence as well. Meanwhile, Martin confirms that he indeed has motives but reminds Ageha that she has nothing to do with it, developing their rivalry. He would treat Ageha like a little kid, such as messing with her hair and giving her candy to make others think that they're on ‘very good terms’.

Loki

Loki and Martin have lived in the same orphanage but had barely spoken to each other. When they reunited, they found themselves sharing the same energy, vibes, humor, and brain cells as the two enjoy making fools of themselves in public and interfering with affairs. They also enjoy causing trouble as if they are childhood best friends. But their seemingly casual friendship is all an act to hide the fact that the both of them are against each other: with Martin willing to take advantage of his friendship with Loki, and Loki doing the same thing to discover his true motives. Both are also highly aware of each other’s intentions but they decide to put on an act, just because they want to. Martin also respects Loki’s goal of sharing happiness with children, often thinking had he were a child again, he would’ve loved the Party Place and the Clowns.

Kiel

The two are distant cousins but never once met each other—until years later, Martin stepped foot in the Party Place. At their first personal meeting, Kiel thought of him as incredibly annoying, even more so than Loki himself, especially when Kiel cringes when Martin does something completely embarrassing. Kiel dislikes Martin at a high amount which the latter is aware of. He'd talk over him in conversations and completely ignore his presence. He'd also strictly forbid him to talk with his friends, much like an overprotective parent. Martin doesn't seem to mind this as he's used to people pushing him away and knows that Kiel is unable to tolerate people with high spirits like him. There are times when Kiel and Martin agree on one another's opinions, when they discuss that jazz is the best music genre.

Lottie

Lottie was very welcoming towards Martin upon their first meeting. She had a slight crush on him and was easily fooled by the latter’s charm, making her the perfect target of Martin. But Martin is not abusive to Lottie, nor does he take advantage of her in a bad way. Though he may be willing to use Lottie to get the Clowns to surrender the Party Place, he cannot do so when he learns about her past and cannot help but sympathize with her. Due to Lottie’s childish and naive demeanor, he sees the healed version of his inner child within Lottie, making him care for her and wanting to protect her, just as he would to his child self if he ever met him. He's willing to act as Lottie's bodyguard whenever she goes out during his spare time.

Amelia

The two met when Martin decided to voluntarily hire himself as a bartender in the Haven Hotel—simply to investigate it as he's assigned. Amelia was reluctant at first when she decided to allow him in, curious of his intentions. Ever since Martin's appearance, the ghosts in the hotel became brighter and livelier due to his friendliness and sociable personality. This made Amelia develop a crush on Martin. Martin also finds Amelia's job as a ghost hotel employee to be very interesting and believes her hotel is worth visiting.

Ellaris

Ella has been suspicious of Martin ever since they first met. She would constantly protect Lottie from him. Despite her suspicions, Ella can’t help but wonder if Martin’s actions are genuine as he always seems to help her. Martin is aware of Ella’s suspicions toward him but also finds her curiosity rather interesting which makes him want to know more about her. He unexpectedly finds himself attached to Ella and begins to question his feelings when they’ve developed a closer relationship, eventually growing romantic feelings.
