before the trip, we had class assignments we had to complete, such as watching videos and writing a short paper about the topics of those videos, reading articles, listening to podcasts, etc. those papers are linked below. we were also required to write a summary of all the videos before going on the trip, to refresh our memory of what we learned. i’ve written out the summary i turned in so you can get a general idea of what the videos were about. i also included my italian alter ego assignment, where i had to research leonardo da vinci. we were also required to write down a couple common italian phrases we thought we might need. those have been listed as well. :)

the pre-session videos talked about natural resources and how they are used in civilizations. the first session was about what to expect in italy and what we’re going to learn about while we’re there. the second session was about resources, history, and sustainability of italy. it talked about how the earth is 4.6 billion years old and how its a complex system of interacting parts - rock, water, life, air. with this comes continuous change through weather, evolution, geological processes, etc. it also talked about how scientists use observations and tests to study our planet. with these, we’ve learned that earth is a water planet and that life evolves and modifies the earth. human on earth depend on the natural resources and significantly change the earth through infrastructure and the amplification of climate change. natural disasters are significantly dangerous for humans as well. but, with all of this, sustainability is still possible, and efforts are being put in place to be more sustainable.
the last video was about the history of italy. it started with the phoenicians in 720 bc who came to western sicily. the greeks came to eastern sicily around 734 bc. at this time and after, there were indigenous people of sicily - the elymi, sicani, and siculi. they may have been descendants of the greeks or trojan war refugees. around 500 bc, the republic era began. this was a democratic society. this was when the trevi fountain was built and aqueducts were created. from 31 bce - 476 bce, the empire reigned. nero was a terrible leader who burnt rome down. during this time, the crucifixion of st. peter happened. vespasian ruled next and built the colosseum. trajan ruled next and was the first non-italian leader. he expanded the empire into romania and jordan. hadrian built a wall and finally, constantine converted rome to catholicism. the italian renaissance happened from 1330 - 1550 ce, which was a revolutionary time for scientists and artis like leonardo da vinci and michelangelo. the sistine chapel was painted during this time. finally, the unification of italy occurred in 1860 - 1861.
