The video starts by talking about how scientists in Italy used their observations about changing water levels and fossils in rocks to conclude that some rocks were made from water. Others saw how volcanoes created rocks as well. Based on these observations, scientists tested hypotheses. These experiments led scientists to learn that Earth is billions of years old, way older than they thought it would be based on the biblical thinking people believed in in the past.
Scientists have also discovered that the Earth is a complex system of relationships between rocks, air, plants, water, life, etc. This, in turn, shows that Earth is constantly changing. The way the different spheres (biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, atmosphere) interact with each other changes the processes of the Earth. Not only do these processes change, but life changes as well. As life evolves and changes over time, the Earth’s processes change as well.
Along with all the processes and life on the Earth, there are also resources that we use and natural disasters we need to watch out for. This includes volcanic eruptions. The video talked about some of the volcanoes we would be hiking up and what would happen if they were to erupt. The supervolcano Campi Elegrei would be Earth changing if it were to erupt. Humans change the Earth in many ways, with one of these ways being how we use the Earth’s resources. We can significantly alter the Earth in multiple ways. But, sustainability is possible and is something we continue to strive for and improve in over time.
