1. First things first, take a deep breath. You're here, and that truly matters. Don't expect to be a superhero on day one, or even in your first few shifts. You're in this for the long haul.

  2. Start talking to other volunteers. Shadow them, even if you didn’t sign up officially for a shadowing session. Nobody will tell you, “Pls stop following me around, this is getting weird now Shelby.” They get it. I shadowed Lindsey S for longer than I (or she) signed up for and I was better for it.

  3. If a visitor asks you something and you don’t know, just say that and grab someone else. Pay attention to how others handle things. Do not make executive decisions on day 1. 🙏 🥲

  4. This is also your chance to ask a ton of questions to your mentors and leads. It's the best time to play the "I'm new here" card. I've been here for a while and still pull it out from time to time. ✌️

  5. If you want to feel truly productive, here are 2 things you could do:

    1. Go clean an empty kennel. It’s not super hard, but makes a big difference. Kennel cleaning & setup
    2. Hang out with some cats and write observation notes. Cat socializing
  6. Did you remember to take it easy?

Let me leave you with a story that keeps me going: The Starfish Story.
