The focus of this module is visual communication, using icons, illustrations and diagrams to display information. The idea that messages can be conveyed through images instead of through words, this can also allow for a design to be more universal as there will be no language barrier and everyone should be able to understand icons/symbols.

2 projects for this module, creating a music app and creating a dashboard.

We are also doing several master apprentice exercises throughout this module, with the first week being copying icon sets. Doing this will be helpful for creating my own icons and illustrations as it focuses on breaking down designs into simpler shapes to understand how they are made.

1st Master Apprentice Task - Icons

To prepare for our first project we were tasked with a master apprentice exercises, by recreating a set of icons in figma, focusing on the shapes of the icons and considering how we would create these icons ourselves.

This was the set of icons that I decided to recreate in figma.

And this was what I was able to create:

After comparing my icons and the originals I noticed that my icons had a slightly thinner line weight than the originals. My main goal when creating these was to understand the overall shape of the icon and I feel like I was able to achieve this. I also wanted to match the font for the icons as accurately as I could, I did this by cycling few several different fonts and focusing on how the ‘a’ in the word ‘search’, as this was the letter that I noticed had the most variations throughout the different fonts.

I experimented in figma with actually making the buttons interactable and was able to create both a hover state and a clicked state which I matched to the style of the analytics button in the original.

Knowing how to create these icons will help me with the creation and design of my music app, specifically the home, history and profile button which could be pages seen in a music app.

I recreated the bookmark and favourite icon from this set of icons as I though they may be useful for my music app.

I began my research for my music app by looking at other music apps and seeing what features they had, Project 1 - Music App
