I want to create a music that focuses on and displays the evolution of music over time, maybe focusing on a specific genre.

Initial Research

Other music apps

I began my research by looking into other music apps, the 3 that I focused on were Apple music, Spotify and YouTube music.

I first looked at the different pages that each app offered:

From this the main 3 pages that I knew that I needed to include in my music app were, a home screen, a library screen, and a search screen.

I also wanted to compare the 3 apps and see what other features they had available to know if there were any other features that I wanted to include in my music app.

• All have an account button that is available from all the pages on the app.
• On youtube music the home page is a more personalised selection and recommendations of songs with a separate explore page showing different categories/genres to help the user find new music. - Youtube music also doesnt include the search bar in the main navigation at the bottom of the app, instead having it in the top right corner.
• The home page on both the apple music and spotify apps have some personalised recommendations and also say what the user has recently listened to, but they also include recommendation based off what is popular across the app. On both apple music and spotify their search page acts like the youtube music explore page, with a list of different genres that the user can select and find music from.
• The library page on all the apps are quite similar, it allows users to see their saved music (individual songs and albums) and playlists they have created. The library on all the apps can also be filtered to find specifically what the user is looking for (playlists, albums, songs, downloaded).
