Appendix: Why WSFJ is a bad fit

At Comparis, some teams use the WSJF-Method to prioritize Features within the SAFe Agile Planning:

$$ ICE-Score = Impact * Confidence * Ease $$

$$ WSFJ= CoD/Jobsize $$

This quite elaborate method deals with a lot of variables:

Weighted Shortest Job First = Cost of Delay ****( User Value or Business Value + Time Criticality + Risk Reduction or Opportunity Enablement) / Jobsize

As straightforward as it seems, please do not use this method to rank your ideas! Here's why I don't recommend it:

⚠️ Ranking ideas with WSJF will blow up your WSJF backlog unnecessarily.

At this stage, your idea is just an idea, an assumption that doing x will solve problem y. Before you make it a feature, you have to make sure that it is a good idea! Don't let the team estimate workload and developers give estimates on story points on vague dreams - make sure your idea is worth following.

WSJF is based on predictions on future events, for example on the job size required to complete a feature and the value delivered to users. Unfortunately and by nature, you can not be sure if your predictions are true. Probably they are not - remember the human biases. It is necessary to critically check the probability that your estimations come true. Undertake effort to gain confidence, before you invest time and money in your idea.

So, calculating the ICE-Score of each idea and ranking it is a better fit for ideas at this stage. Doing so also takes the probability of occurrence into account.
