In this touchpoint, the customer arrives at the store after having reserved their books online and received an email confirmation. For this touchpoint, I needed to create signage to establish social distancing rules and directionals for COVID-19.

I used this ( →) sign for copy inspiration. I liked the way the first sentence was worded (which was what I was having difficulty doing succinctly). Instead of listing out things like it does at the end of the poster, I chose to combine a couple of them into sentences that look a little more "bookish."

I like the circle floor decals that are on the floors of public areas now. They aren't exactly a new concept, but having to have them to indicate social distancing is obviously new. I prefer the look of the circle decals on the floor, as opposed to a rectangle or square. The circle is not a shape we see often on the ground, and especially not in bright colors, so it seems to be more effective that way.

I began sketching out things I needed. I knew I wanted and needed floor decals - directionals to indicate flow of aisles as well as being a visual reminder and indicator of being 6 ft apart from another in the stores. I wanted a "enter only" and "exit only" door as well, so I could show the flow of traffic in and out of the store. And because of the nature of this project and its purpose to improve its online reservation capabilities, I knew I needed to include a sign showing where online pickup orders would be handled once a customer actually got into the store. Finally, I wanted to create a door/window poster-like piece that was eye-catching, but laid down some ground rules for being inside the store. I knew this would be my biggest sign for this touchpoint.

I also played with some other signage/decals that I never ended up moving past the sketch phase.

These sketches (→) were done after my initials. I wanted my second round of sketches to be a little more solid on what I wanted and what was needed for the store. I also included where I was envisioning things to go in the store, and including things that I didn't actually make but drew out (the door barrier - I was thinking of a clear acrylic or plexiglass barrier to separate the doors, the floor decals as well as the door signs would indicate direction.) In the bottom blue post it note (the one rotated to the left), I drew where I thought a pickup station might be installed in the store.

I wanted the floor decals to be placed as every other one - every 3 feet in the more narrow aisles and main pathway, the opposite decal would be placed so that the "please keep 6 ft apart" decal would actually be placed every 6 ft.

This is the window sign! I'm including it first in this case study journey, since it would most likely the first thing the customer sees when they walk up to the store front. I was having some trouble wording the sign so that it was firm but also friendly. I wanted this sign to convey Beers Books stance on social distancing - fully in support, and doing anything and everything to protect their staff and customers.

This sign is the largest at 27" high by 21" wide.

The online pick up sign, I imagined, would either be suspended on posts dividing the counter and facing the door so it is quickly visible after walking in the door, or placed on the front or side of the counter. This sign is 18" in length and 12" in height, so it is spotted easily after walking inside the store.

These are the door signs. They would be the next things the customer would see walking through the door. As I drew in my sketches, I thought they might be placed on the glass doors above the handles. The "enter" sign would be placed street facing on the right-hand side, and the "exit" on the inside of the left.

These signs are 8" in length and 5" in height.

These are the floor decals. They are 12" by 12". They are high contrast (as are the other signs,) so they are easily detectable when walking through the aisles of the store.
