Tropical deforestation contributes 15% to 20% of annual global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Indonesia and Brazil are the 3rd and 4th largest GHG emitters in the world, and ~80% of Indonesia's GHG emissions and ~70% of Brazil's emissions are due to deforestation.

The focus of this research is on the Brazilian Amazon, though many conclusions can be generalized across tropical forests.
