Now that we have reviewed our squad, we are in a position to identify our needs more clearly.
For each need, we will create three shortlists: the first based on profiles identified through data.
To do so, we would first identify the squad's needs for a given position in order to create an ideal profile, either to compensate for existing weaknesses or to effectively replace departing players. Once the profile is defined, we translate our expectations into data: if we expect a winger to create danger in the final third through passing, this will be reflected in metrics such as passes into the final third, crosses, key passes, xA, SCA, GCA, and so on. To refine our search, we assign varying levels of importance to different statistics through a weighting system: for example, 60% of the profile will be based on priority metrics, 30% on secondary indicators, and the remaining 10% on complementary data, allowing us to obtain a complete and nuanced evaluation of the player.
This approach allows us to build a comprehensive statistical profile, after which we simply need to identify the players who match it. The results must then be weighted according to the estimated level of the league, the overall strength of the player’s team within that league, and filtered based on extra-sporting criteria such as age, market value, and salary. The process ultimately produces a shortlist of a few relevant players.
I will be using different available-for-all apps such as : Danishscout, FootVerse and FBref.
The second shortlist based on market opportunities (undesirable players or those struggling at their club), and the third consisting of players approaching the end of their contracts. Given Olympique Lyonnais’ urgent requirements and the limited time for adaptation, the targeted players are already playing in Europe.
Once these shortlists are compiled, we will assess OL’s financial capacity and appeal for each listed player. Finally, a final list of a few profiles will be analyzed through video: these players will be personally observed and filtered so that only three recommended players per need remain at the end of the report!
