Paint System is made up of Channels which each contain their own Layers.
In the Shader Editor, there is a Paint System Panel that allows users to open the layer Node Groups

Color Channels are the most common channel you will use. Some templates come with more channels normal, metallic, roughness. If your setup does not have said channels, you can add them and choose a channel template.
This layer allows you to paint on top of your 3D objects.
Each Image layer can have a different UV map, but will still work together.
When adding a new Image layer, you can choose the following options:
New Image Layer
Let Paint System create a blank image
Import Image Layer
Load an image from your computer
Use Existing Image Layer
Use an image that already exists in the Blender file

This layer fills everything with a color that can be adjusted.
Great for Base Colors, combine with an above mask, it can be used like a Global Color Swatch or a Placeholder.
Use a Linked Solid Color Layer across multiple materials that will use the same color and add a **Mask** to each instance to start painting without the commitment.

This layer allows you to add a gradient on your material
When adding a gradient layer, you can choose the following options:
Gradient Map Map the colors of the layers below it to a gradientLinear Gradient Create and use an Empty Object to create a gradient linearlyRadial Gradient Create and use an Empty Object to create a gradient radiallyDistance Gradient Map the distance of of the object to a gradient

For Linear Gradient and Radial Gradient , you can use the automatically-added Empty Object to determine the placement of the gradient in 3D space
This layer allows you to add Blender procedural texture on your material
