<aside> 👋🏼 Hi I’m Camilo. I’m from Cuba 🇨🇺  where the financial system and local money aren't working as efficiently as they could be. This is for many reasons: The U.S. embargo, socialism, and sanctions against our government are just a few examples stopping us from being able to enter the freedom, as humans, we know we're made for.

Due to the war, people in Ukraine are experiencing similar problems. SLYK provides a way to independently support people and businesses in Ukraine. I've created templates (on SLYK) for people, and business, in Ukraine to duplicate and use. When people in Ukraine duplicate my template, they will be able to receive remittance and donations. Person to person. Without an organization taking a percentage.

The Cuban experience

Many people in Cuba, including me, have launched P2P remittance businesses using Slyk, a fintech platform that makes it easy to build digital money & e-commerce businesses. (Economist, Coindesk, and many others have written about Slyk in Cuba, as it has brought some freedom, opportunity, and entrepreneurship to us in a new way).

The benefit for people sending/receiving remittance to/in Cuba is that these independent P2P businesses offer free-market (vs. government-fixed) exchange rates that are much better than the rates offered by the banks and big remittance businesses (like Western Union).

These “mom & pop” remittance businesses also provide liquidity in a more secure way compared to dealing with street-level currency exchangers. They can also be set to private (just friends and family, invite-only) vs. open P2P platforms such as LocalBitcoins or Airtm. Not everyone is comfortable listing their offers publicly.

Here are some examples of such P2P remittance businesses operating in Cuba using Slyk:
