Unit profiling

Case study: Double pivot — Aston Villa FC

The objective here is to formalize the profiles of players who can operate in a given area, based on a pre-established framework. In this case, the “match scenario” framework helps guide the selection of the starting XI according to the game plan or the opponent.

Profiling is therefore based on two deliberately contrasting scenarios:

• Gameplan 1 : Aston Villa aims to control the game with the ball. Players are evaluated based on what they bring and what they cost the team during

  • short and patient possession phases (deep build-up, high possession), with a focus on short-passing central progression and counter-pressing;
  • high pressing phases, with a focus on their ability to pressure the opposition defense and/or support the pressing structure.

• Gameplan 2 : Aston Villa aims to control the game without the ball. Players are evaluated based on what they bring and what they cost the team during

  • patient defensive phases (mid/low block, passive high structure), with a focus on protecting the space between the lines, the central axis, and the penalty area;
  • fast attacking phases, with a focus on initiating, progressing, and finishing counter-attacks.
