Learning Goals
- Students will be able to define the word biodiversity and understand its importance.
- Students will grasp the basics of population ecology.
- Students will be able to identify patterns in the human population.
- Students will be able to define the four main parts of an ecosystem food-web.
- Students will be able to analyze an ecosystem undergoing primary succession.
Overview
As you saw on the previous page, each day of the week has a different topic with different learning goals. We have tried to make every day different and as interactive as possible. Below is a short summary of the tasks and deliverables for each day. They should each only take 10-30 minutes, depending on the day and age of the student.
Monday: DIY Wildlife Search
- Learning about biodiversity through exploring an outdoor area near them (preferably a park, backyard area, or something similar)
- Filling out a handout with 8 different living things they found and a description of them!
- Afterwards, there will be review questions to answer!
Tuesday: Populations in Nature Story
- Reading a short illustrated story of Danny the Duck showing off his pond and the functions of different populations within it
Wednesday: World Population YouTube Video
- Watching a short video and answering review questions about the human population and how it has changed over time
Thursday: Ecosystems PBS Kids Game
- Playing a game about ecosystems and following along on our writeup to learn more about ecosystems and answer some questions
Friday: DIY Succession Comic about Mount St. Helens
- Creating an ecosystem book about the different species that reappeared after Mount St. Helens erupted
