Biodiversity is how much variety there is in life in the world or a habitat.
In today’s DIY, you get to take on the role of a wildlife biologist by examining the biodiversity of living things in your own backyard!

Wildlife biologists are scientists who study the health of habitats (the natural home of a living thing) and ecosystems (a community of living things). One way they do this is by surveying (labeling and counting) all the plants and animals to determine how much biodiversity is in a habitat. Wait what? What’s biodiversity?
Biodiversity is how many different living things live in the same place. Everywhere has biodiversity, but some places are more biodiverse than others. The more biodiverse a place is, the more different types of plants and animals it has. In general, the more biodiverse a place is, the better. Less biodiverse places are more fragile and are more likely to suffer great losses from disease or climate change. On the other hand, very biodiverse places are strong, healthy, productive, and long-lasting.
Today, you will learn more about biodiversity by exploring an outdoor area near you! Luckily, plants and animals are all around us, and finding them requires only a little curiosity and patience. In this environmental science project, you will do your own biodiversity survey right in your own backyard (or in a nearby park or field) by recording how many species of plants and animals you can find.
