Learning new technology and systems design
Throughout my undergraduate career, I have been devoted to solving problems in communities and work environments through research-based methods. I graduated with a degree in sociology in April 2023, and have loved the role that robust research plays in adding to our understanding of the world and the people around us. Now, I plan on using my research skills for social impact, and I hope to utilize my design thinking skills in the process.
I am very interested in the human condition, in how we can improve it and how we can build bridges across society. Sociology taught me how structural inequality impacts people, especially those in marginalized groups. However, what amazed me was that it wasn't just institutional structure that impacted people's opportunities; even the physical structure of their surroundings (through universities, public parks, streets, churches) would change who they came in contact with and how they could improve their circumstances. This got me interested in how design could help solve the social problems I had been learning about in my studies.
As my horizons expanded, other subjects came into focus as contributing to the wicked problems we faced. The environment, mental health, our growing sense of placelessness, the way we treated indigenous traditions, the way we produce everyday objects…it is all connected.
Dream projects of mine would be to design university campuses, libraries and public parks to encourage more economic connectedness between classes, social capital programs for low-income families, and more robust systems for the growing flexibility of the job market.
