We live in a world where AI can accelerate everything, but it comes at the expense of craft. Not every part of the production process requires a sense of craft, but many do, and those parts are frequently being encouraged to be skipped in this new technological age, which is still in process.
This project reveres craft.
That being said, the Bullets and Brimstone Project is not, as a stance, anti-AI.
One of the most frequent use cases that many people cite as an acceptable use of AI is character art for your home tabletop game. The argument being this is a personal use that does not take money away from the artists whose work the engine was trained on. The counterargument being that people should be commissioning artists for their characters as well. This debate is passionate and ongoing, and we want to make sure everyone who plays Bullets and Brimstone does so in a way they enjoy and feel comfortable with.
In service of that goal, here are our current stances on AI for this project:
- No commercial release of any Bullets and Brimstone material, whether by the Project itself or monetized community content, will be allowed to contain AI-generated art.
- Players can feel free to use AI to make images of their characters and enhance their game however they wish. Sharing these images is also fine. We also strongly advise against community members shaming or chastising those who do so. We encourage developers and players to use https://bria.ai/ where they can, as its models are all trained on images that have been licensed from the artists involved.
- While using AI for creative writing can be of some assistance, any lore or written content for Bullets and Brimstone is encouraged to be crafted from one's own imagination. Content that feels generated will not be approved for higher-tier promotion.
- AI-generated art may be used for concepting in the development phase of a contribution. Contributors can feel free to use it to spice up and contextualize their work without fear of backlash, keeping in mind policy 1.
- Any artist who wishes to replace a piece of AI art within a development section with their own art will be fast-tracked for approval. We highly encourage artists to contribute to the Bullets and Brimstone Project in any way they can. If you know an artist who might be interested, you do the Project a great service by showing them the project and encouraging them to contribute.
The goals of these policies are all in service to one goal: to get as many people enjoying and contributing to Bullets and Brimstone in the spirit of open-source development.
We encourage anyone with questions to bring them to us in our #ai channel on our Discord.
