Preliminary note in light of COVID-19

I wrote the guide long before the stay-at-home orders went effective for the COVID-19. In light of recent situations, I imagine that the platform could further facilitate other pertinent functions, such as organizing for mutual aid, forming philosophers' alliance against COVID-related racism, online teaching skill sharing, stay-at-home meme sharing, zoom hangouts, etc. We will take some liberty to set up some COVID-related channels, but please feel free to let creativity flow and experiment on the potential of the platform during this strange time!

Introduction

Welcome to the MAP International slack workspace! This is part of our effort to facilitate communication and support for the worldwide community of cartographers. Here, you can connect with other cartographers through subfields, personal identities, professional stages, etc. We also hope this workspace to provide channels for paper swaps, informal hangouts, skill sharing, and sharing of lived experiences.

Thank you so much for the wonderful work that you're doing through MAP and thank you for taking a chance on yet another social network platform! You are welcome to use slack as often (as I do) or as rarely as you want.

Slack is an extremely versatile software and we hope that we can together turn it into a platform that we all would benefit from. Besides the extensive official guide from the Slack website, I would like to highlight a few ways that we at MAP International imagine the MAP slack could do. Before I do so, I would like to emphasize our community values on the platform.

Community Values

We at MAP International firmly believe that members of the MAP slack should treat each other with respect and decency at all times. We have zero tolerance of bullying, harassment, microaggression, aggression, etc. on the MAP slack platform. If you have concerns about individual or collective behaviors, please let any of the international organizers know. As the platform grow, we also envisage a formation of a climate committee on slack, so that members can collectively decide on community values as well as enforcement.

How to use MAP Slack

Who can join

Undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and junior faculty members (5 years within the award of a PhD) who are involved with local MAP chapters, identify with being members of marginalized groups in philosophy, or work on underrepresented subfields of philosophy are welcome to join. Please extend the invitations by sharing this link along with this present guide (linked here).

We have secured a Standard Plan for the MAP Slack workspace! This means that your messages would not be automatically deleted after a certain time (as the free plan would do).

Personal Profile

Because the number of our active members is projected to be large, when you join, please write a little bit about yourself in the "What I do" part of your profile. Institutional affiliation, stages in the profession, preferred pronouns, quirky facts about you are all perfect things to write about. You can absolutely be as boring as I am and write "International Organizer; PhD student at UC Irvine LPS; she/her/hers." (hi there!)

We also encourage you to include your full name in your profile. However, you can choose whatever display name for yourself, as long as it conforms with our community values.

Channels

Channels are heart and soul of a slack platform. You can think of each channel as a group message with purpose. Everybody is automatically added to #general and #random, and can choose to join other channels as they wish. Below are the different channels we have created. We welcome MAP members creating other channels that suit their needs. You can also choose to leave any channel.

*You can pin a message to a channel so that all members can find it easily, or you can star a message (or a channel) for your own reference.
