About Wilderland Academy

Wilderland Academy is a nature-based K–8 microschool on Harmony Ranch in the Ogden Valley, blending Montessori philosophy, the Alpha School 2-hour learning model, and AI-assisted personalized learning. We are in our fourth year, growing from 20 to 50 students, opening a second campus, and launching a middle school program β€” all while maintaining the academic results and school culture that families drive up to 50 minutes each way to be part of.

We are not a traditional school. We are not a traditional nonprofit. We are a small, ambitious community of people who believe that education is one of the most powerful levers for solving some of the most urgent crises facing young people today β€” the loneliness epidemic, the youth mental health crisis, the disconnection from nature and agency that defines too many childhoods. We are building something real, and we are looking for people who want to build it with us.

The Role

Board Members at Wilderland serve in a governance and advisory capacity, providing strategic oversight and fiduciary responsibility for the organization. But what makes this board unusual is that we are also a working community β€” a ranch, a school, and a living environment β€” and the most valuable board members we have found are those who bring deep, specialized expertise that directly serves the school's operations and growth.

This is not a credential-collection role. We are not looking for names on a letterhead. We are looking for people who are genuinely useful β€” who show up, contribute something specific, and care about what happens to the children and families we serve.

Board Members commit up to 10 hours per week, applied primarily within their area of specialization. This is a volunteer position with no financial compensation.

Areas of Specialization We Are Actively Seeking

We are particularly interested in candidates who bring deep expertise in one or more of the following areas. You do not need experience in all of them β€” depth in one is more valuable than familiarity with several.

Behavioral Intervention for Children You have professional training and experience in behavioral health, applied behavior analysis, trauma-informed care, or related fields. You understand how neurodivergent children β€” particularly those with ADHD, autism, or behavioral disorders β€” learn, communicate, and thrive. You are comfortable working directly with students and can help our guides develop their practice in real time.

Campus Construction and Facility Improvements You have hands-on experience in construction, renovation, project management, or trades work. Our campuses are living, evolving environments, and we have ongoing infrastructure needs that require someone who can assess, plan, and execute. This is not an advisory role β€” we need someone who can roll up their sleeves.

Permaculture and Regenerative Land Design You have training or substantial experience in permaculture design, food forest development, regenerative agriculture, or related disciplines. Our ranch setting offers a genuine opportunity to build a learning landscape that teaches children about ecosystems, interdependence, and land stewardship through direct experience. We want someone who can help us design and develop that environment with intention.

Animal Care and Husbandry You have experience with farm animals, livestock, or small animal care in an educational or working ranch context. Animals are a meaningful part of what makes Harmony Ranch a distinctive learning environment, and we want someone who can help us develop animal care programming that is safe, enriching, and integrated into the educational experience.
