At White Rabbit Japan we’ve adopted a pretty unique, forward-thinking hiring process.

Generally, the hiring process will consist of up to 5 stages

  1. Your initial application (i.e. looking at your resume and questionnaire responses)

  2. A first interview. Performed remotely, usually via Slack (text chat).

  3. A second, more in-depth interview.

  4. A trial. All positions at White Rabbit Japan involve a paid trial in the application process, which is a short project or set of tasks that will be assessed by our hiring teams. We’ve found that the best way to evaluate working with someone is to do just that!

  5. A final chat (aka “CEO Chat”). By this time, our hiring team will have said that they’re happy to employ you but as no stage before will salary have been discussed. At this point, you speak to Max Hodges or another executive — salary is discussed as well as final role details and they make the final decision to accept your employment.

It may take some time to hear back after the initial stage – usually days to weeks (rarely months if we are not actively hiring for a role but still sourcing candidates—the job description state this). After that it may take a few weeks to get to the trial.

Each hiring team has its own process and it will therefore vary depending on the role that you’re applying for. However, the above list represents, we hope, a fair idea of what to expect – if you’re lucky it may be shorter.

Application Submission

The first step in our hiring process for is applying. We require all candidates apply. You’ll find each of our open positions on our careers site.

After you’ve identified the position you’re interested in, submit an application by uploading your resume and answering a few application questions. Make sure to dedicate time and effort to all aspects of your application. Our hiring team places a strong emphasis on thoughtful responses to application questions. Once you submit your application, it goes straight into our Applicant Tracking System where a recruiter or hiring manager will review it.

After our team has evaluated your application against the requirements of the role, they will contact you via email to let you know whether or not you’ll be moving to the next stage of the hiring process.

Slack Interview

For many candidates, one of the first steps in the application process is a Slack Interview. Slack is a text-based messaging platform that we rely heavily on as a distributed company. White Rabbit Japan team members use Slack on a daily basis to share their ideas, interact, and engage with team members around the world. Because Slack communication is an integral part of our day-to-day, we use Slack interviews to gauge candidates’ ability to clearly convey their thoughts via text-based messaging. It’s also a great way for candidates to gain a sense of whether or not this way of communicating works for them.

We recognize that, for most candidates, this will be a completely new experience. To help prepare you for a Slack interview, see our most important tips below!
