People have long been the bedrock of our global economic engine. In particular, in emerging economies, the vast majorities of labor forces are employed by small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) who are reliant on their labor to run daily operations. However, most SMEs manage their staff sub-optimally, often using pen and paper to perform most tasks. Everything from tracking attendance to tabulating salary to generating pay-slips is cumbersome and time-consuming. The typical small company spends an average of 2 hours a week managing their staff instead of giving more time and mindshare to their own priorities. In turn, employees are also affected, as they typically don't have access to formal employment history or documents. While living between paychecks, employees have no option but to turn to their employers for salary advances to make ends meet. This locks up working capital for SMEs—as much as 25% of their liquid balance in some cases! On both sides, this inevitably becomes a tough cycle that is almost impossible to escape. At Vara, we believe that empowering human capital through technology will drive the highest returns.
We've actively served over 100,000 small companies so far across Indonesia and are just getting started. We have big plans. We're dreamers, builders, thinkers, and doers. We hail from a variety of countries, speak a multitude of languages, and translate between our cultures. We're lean and we work really hard. We work fully remotely, but a large chunk of our team is based out of Singapore, Indonesia, and India. We share a common vision and dream - and every single day, we're grinding to make that a universal reality.
