Page Purpose

The purpose of this page is to provide a brief guide to the steps of an adapted version of Team-Teaching Mapping for clinical teams at different stages of development. This adaptation of team mapping is particularly focused on highlighting the resident integration process into the clinic and team-based care and figuring out how the team can work together to best support this. By weaving two resident scenarios into the patient personas, one for a resident onboarding and the other for a resident encountering a challenge, this adaptation prompts questions about teaching and learning activities among the team.

The guide is designed for individuals who have some knowledge and experience facilitating a Team Mapping session. However, if you need additional support, please refer back to the broader Team Mapping Facilitator Toolkit.

What is Team-Teaching Mapping?

Team-Teaching Mapping is a facilitated workshop for teams of preceptors at a learning center to clarify roles, tasks, and coordination of teaching and learning activities across a team. The goals of Team-Teaching Mapping are to:

Aim

The aim of a team-teaching mapping is to improve resident integration into clinic and team-based care, enhance the quality of patient care through effective teaching and learning, identify areas of strengths and weaknesses in the team's teaching and learning activities, find opportunities for innovation and experimentation in teaching and learning activities, and create a supportive environment for residents to learn and grow.

Team Fit

Before starting a Team-Teaching Mapping workshop, it's important to consider if your team is looking for:

Process

To prepare for a Team-Teaching Mapping session, follow these steps:

  1. Schedule a 30-minute prep call with a clinic lead or two to learn about the clinic that will be engaged, select personas for mapping, and schedule the larger mapping session. Review the below link for some ideas on helpful clinic context and session design questions:

  2. Distribute a quick team assessment tool to those who will be involved in the mapping.
