I wrote about this project here: https://turiphro.nl/projects/modular-desk-blocks
Specs
surface _ _.. _ _..
rails |_ _| |_______________|
groove ___| |___..
. .
. . width-> height^ lengthx
- surface: at least 18mm on both sides and possibly extends further in one direction (desk plate)
- rails: width=116mm, height=18mm
- groove: width=85mm, height=100+mm (possibly open space downwards)
- the groove has an open bottom and may extend to arbitrary depth (100mm+ is desired), allowing for deep blocks (e.g., deep trays, hanging devices)
- the groove might be missing (top lane can have a flat bottom; right drawing) at short intervals for construction purposesh, or across the whole (for surface-mounted or on-desk rails)
- the blocks may have a variable length; a multiple of 10cm is encouraged (10cm, 20cm, 50cm, 100cm)
- the blocks may have a variable height (up no limit, down at least 10cm from upper surface if there is a groove)
- all rails measurements may have an error of up to 2mm upwards, giving blocks some room for inefficiencies (skew, curvature)
Blocks
Some ideas. Finish could be in the same wood, or painted in colourful blocks.
- Spacer (desk extension)
- Bakjes/trays (pens, papers etc; deep or shallow w/h groove) → 1x deep, 3x shallow
- Tray with lid (thin 2mm, hinges below; deep or shallow=hidden cavity inside shelf)
- Monitor stand
- Spacer for monitor grip (+ hole for wires)
- Archive holder (upstanding) → rails in archive cabinet
