  1. Research Black History Month and its origins. Write down three new things you learned and share with those closest to you.
    1. While the US and Canada celebrate in the month of February, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom celebrate in the month of October.

    2. Black History Month was first officially celebrated in 1970 (and had begun happening as a month-long celebration on college campuses in the 1960s); but before that, Negro History Week was celebrated (beginning in 1926).

The second week of February was named Negro History Week, because it coincided with the birthdays of two people whose lives were then celebrated by black communities: Abraham Lincoln (DOB: Feb 12) and Frederick Douglass (DOB: Feb 20)

    3. To lay the foundation of Negro History Week, Carter G Woodson and Jesse E Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) (now known as Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)). This group sponsored the first Negro History Week in 1926.

    4. (bonus) each Black History Month has its own theme. 2021's theme is “Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity”
