Prepared by the team at Thatch - the all-in-one space for your travel life
LAST UPDATED: JULY 21, 2020
Counties across California have moved into Phase 3 and are starting to reopen, allowing for more tourism and leisure travel. We've pulled together the latest to help you plan your next adventure. Restrictions and regulations are changing frequently, so be sure to check official websites for the most up-to-date information before you travel. And remember, wear your mask!
Note: Non-essential travel is still discouraged, and staying in hotels or B&B's is still more high-risk than camping with your own equipment. That being said, if you choose to stay in a hotel or B&B that is open, make sure you check to see what kind of cleaning procedures and social distancing guidelines have been implemented to create a safer environment. See our full coronavirus resource for more details.
State-wide Resources
State Regulations
- As of July 13, Governor Newsom announced that in all counties across the state, restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, and museums must once again close indoor operations and bars and breweries that do not serve food must close entirely. Additionally, counties on the state monitoring list have additional restrictions enforced for indoor services like gyms and salons. You can find the latest information on what is open in specific counties here.
CA State Parks
- Throughout the California State Park System, most parks are now open and campgrounds have started to reopen with modifications, though some campgrounds remain closed. More information on specific openings can be found here.
- Most high public-use indoor facilities including museums and visitor centers remain closed and special events and tours continue to be closed/canceled until further notice.
- Pro-tip: If campgrounds are closed in your preferred area, consider checking Hipcamp.com to see if there are any private campgrounds available.
Lodging for Leisure Travel
- As of June 12, short-term rentals, hotels, and other lodging were permitted to resume business activities for leisure travel in accordance with State guidance if approved by specific counties. More info here.
