Getting ready to move can be stressful. Thankfully, there are some things you can do to make the process easier.

Start packing your belongings. Label all boxes. If possible, defrost the refrigerator 24 to 48 hours before moving day.

Also, take photos of all your electronics before you pack them. This will help you reattach them quickly when you unpack. Moving requires budgeting and focusing on financial security. Investing in things like home warranties would be good to get. If you are asking, “What are home warranties?” Go online and look for reputable companies who have experience with providing home warranties. A home warranty is a service contract that can cover things that need to be repaired or replaced in your home.

1. Packing

Make sure you have all your packing supplies, such as boxes, wrapping paper, tape, markers and scissors. Also get a toolkit, like a basic hammer, screwdriver and tape measure.

Label each box as you pack it to make unpacking much easier. Be sure to mark clearly on the boxes if they contain breakable items or are especially heavy.

Donate or sell any nonperishable food you won’t be taking to your new home. This is a great way to clear out your pantry and do something nice for your local community.

2. Moving Day

It’s a good idea to have some grab-and-go snacks and bottled water on hand during moving day. Moving is physically demanding work, so it’s important to have food to keep your energy up.

Another must-have for moving day is toilet paper, tissues, and soap. There’s nothing worse than not having these bathroom essentials on a stressful move.

Alert your primary agencies of your move and set cut-off/activation dates for cable, gas, water, garbage. You’ll also want to notify your insurance company and arrange for transfer of policies. Make sure you have your medications and prescriptions in order.

3. Packing for Your Pets

During the move, kids and pets can get stressed out and can even become lost in the chaos of boxes, furniture being moved and people walking through hallways. It’s important to plan ahead and arrange for childcare or pet sitter services on moving day.

It’s also a good idea to keep a few boxes of essentials, like toilet paper, laundry detergent, snacks and drinks, and first aid supplies. This will help ease the transition and will make it much easier if there are any unexpected bumps in your journey to your new home.

A move is a stressful time for everyone, including your pets. Dogs and cats may become anxious as boxes and furniture are packed up, so it’s a good idea to pack their favorite toys, blankets, and beds ahead of time.

Consider taking your pet on a few car rides prior to moving day to help them get used to the ride and the environment. Your vet can also recommend mild sedatives for long trips or car sickness, and you should have your dog or cat’s microchip information updated with the new address.

A move can be stressful for pets, too. It is best to slowly introduce them to their new home with supervised visits and one room at a time. Keep familiar food, bedding and toys on hand to help them feel more comfortable during this transition.

Before you start packing, visit your veterinarian to ensure your pet is up-to-date on their rabies shots and microchipped. This will also be a good time to change their ID tags with your new address. This will reduce the risk of them running away during the move, as well.
