Background:

<aside> 📌 Flying Kites is a Kenyan-based nonprofit that believes education is the key to overcoming poverty. They are working in partnership with the Ministry of Education and a network of resource-poor public primary schools in rural Kenya to transform education in the area. Their approach involves several key initiatives:

• Firstly, they focus on upskilling teachers by providing them with training and resources that improve their capacity and ultimately enhance student outcomes. This addresses the issue that many primary school teachers in rural Kenya lack the necessary skills for the curriculum they teach.
• Secondly, Flying Kites invests in girls' education by training female teachers and supporting the adoption of "Girls United" Clubs. These clubs aim to promote sexual reproductive health and gender equality among girls in the schools.
• Thirdly, the organization supports healthy schools by introducing sustainable school meal programs and improving essential infrastructure such as clean water, hygiene facilities, and student safety measures. </aside>

🤝 Partnership Objectives:

Flying Kites envisions a partnership with Team4Tech that builds on both organizations’ expertise and resources to develop a Technology Resource Lab at the Flying Kites Teacher Training Center. This will provide access to technology and ICT training with the goal of developing and nurturing digital literacy for thousands of rural teachers and students to ultimately advance the quality of both teaching and learning across Kenya’s South Kinangop district. With Team4Tech’s support, Flying Kites is aiming to improve teachers digital literacy, student engagement and outcomes, and record-keeping and reporting.

What are the 2022 results?

Following the development of a revised curriculum focused on core technology skills, Flying Kites intentionally scaled back the target number of teachers to ensure that participants had the necessary instruction, coaching, and time needed to learn, develop, and demonstrate their skills with independence. Their revised approach was designed to meet teachers where they are and allow them to progress through the modules at a pace that is best-suited

• 22 workshops for up to 21 teachers were conducted at the on-site Computer Lab
• Achieved an enrollment of 165 teachers (95% of all teachers in their Network), where skill level progressions were tracked and nurtured skill level on an individual basis—there was an increased use of technology in the classroom
• 24% of teachers are striving to demonstrate independence in use of skills in Module 1 (Intro to use of Basic Devices, including computers, tablets, keyboards, and smartphones)
• 72% of teachers successfully completed Module 1 and enter 2023 in Module 2 (Internet Navigation & Establishing a Google account for email, and creating a Google drive for document storage and management)
• 4% of teachers have successfully completed Module 2 and are at Module 3 (Accessing & Managing Online Resources for Teaching)

Grant Budget Analysis:

They purchased a Workstation for the trainer, supplies, and transportation services to make the training center successful for use. They also were able to installation of an Internet mast using the grant, providing a stable platform for access to the Internet at their campus and in the larger community.
