BelliesWave is a substantial pixel which can change its volume and color dynamically. The surface of each pixel consists of two layers of different colored rubber membranes. When it is inflated by air, the inner layer will gradually become visible through the outer layer, and the balloon will turn into a gradient mix of both layers. According to its volume, the pixel can change its color gradually. We have developed several types of physical displays using an array of these pixels. The system can inflate each pixel separately or move the pixels in a sequence of specific patterns like a wave or a spiral. At SXSW2017, we also show an interactive version in which 25 pixels react the users’ gestures.

BS1スペシャル「若者よ 世界を驚嘆させよ!大見本市SXSW」

NHK BS1 4月16日(日)

This work was originally created by F.Nojiri in 2014. It was re-worked for displaying in SXSW 2017 mainly by J.Fuji and myself. Also, the exhibit contained new prototypes which uses custom made pixels which have bilayer elastomer for more durability and size.
