introduction

as my senior capstone project, i chose to combine my passion for music data and my experience in sync licensing to create this project! i analyzed the relationship between music genres and TV show genres in sync licensing. by leveraging data analytics, the project identifies patterns in successful music placements and develops an algorithm to help people who are new to sync make more informed decisions about sync opportunities.

while i firmly believe that the music selected for sync licensing is inherently emotional and subjective, my intention is for this tool to serve as a helpful starting point or guide for those who are new to the sync world. ultimately, the project’s goal is to streamline the music selection process for media productions while helping artists gain strategic exposure.

importance of the project

[01] phase 1: the start

beginning this project was the hardest part because i had no idea where i was going to start. when first pitching this project to my professors and peers, the biggest challenge i ran into was where am i going to find this information? so, i started researching the most successful music placements in the most recent years, where i came across this billboard article.

identifying the most used songs

i created an excel sheet, organizing by the TV show, TV show genre, when the episode with the song was released, the song that was used, the artist, the song genre, and the release date of the song.

there were some **pros** and **cons** from using this article as a source

**cons:**
❌ very limited sample size
❌ subjective

**pros:**
✅ cultural relevance
✅ targeted focus
✅ trustworthy source!

despite the cons, i felt that the pros outweighed the cons, so i chose to
continue using this as my main source for this project.
