Summary

You can use a custom domain name with any SuperHi Editor project. Here's how to set that up.

Why you should use a custom domain

Custom domains (yoursitename.com) add credibility and professionalism to websites. With all SuperHi Editor projects, you get a free yoursitename.superhi.com URL, which is publicly accessible on the web as long as you've published your project. While we provide a free subdomain URL, if you're working on a project for a client, to use as a portfolio, or to showcase work for purposes other than learning and playing with code - just as some examples - it can be a good idea to consider purchasing a custom domain.

1. Purchase a domain

If you don't already own the domain you'd like to connect your website to, you'll have to purchase it first. Skip to section 2 if you already own your custom domain name.

Domains cost around $10-15 USD per year for a standard .com site, but can be a bit higher for a different domain extension (for example, .org or .co). Domains are usually renewed on an annual basis and you'll have the option at checkout to select auto-renew or manual renew. We like to pick auto-renew for websites that you know you'd like to stick around for a while, and manual renew for projects that may be temporary, so you're not accidentally stuck paying a domain fee on a project that no longer exists.

Some common domain providers include Bluehost, Godaddy, Google Domains and Namecheap but you can purchase them from any domain provider you like.

Just a note that SuperHi is not directly affiliated with any of these, and we won't be able to support any issues with third party providers. (We're working on being able to buy custom domains directly from us. For now, you'll have to purchase them separately.)

2. Add your custom domain to your SuperHi project

Add both www and the non-www (also known as a "naked" URL) versions of the custom URL, to ensure that both versions work. You should have two URLs filled out in the fields, like this.

3. Find your DNS Settings

Once you've purchased a domain, you'll need to access your DNS settings within your account at your domain provider. We've included a few links to where you can find this for some common domain providers. In some cases, you may need to contact your domain provider directly and share the instructions (in "Edit your DNS settings") with their support team.

4. Edit your DNS settings

When you've located your DNS settings, add the following DNS record:
