Here’s an exercise if you have a few minutes: go through several institutions (like voting, markets, organizational hierarchies, social networks, science, and courts) and try to find an example of each kind of failure. When do they justify the wrong things and lose legitimacy? When are they gamed? When do they become meaningless, performative, or careerist?
