First thing, let's get to know the difference between a CV and Résumé ?
Often times, people confuse between the two terms CV and résumé. In this part, we will explain in details the difference between them to avoid making such mistake in the future. Let's get into definition :
- Resume as we know means also a summary.
- CV is from Latin curriculum detail which is English for the course of life.
Dont's
- Be simple, don't overuse colors! Stick to one or two.
- Avoid using progress charts to describe your level of skills. They don't have a meaning for recruiters: you are comparing yourself to what and based on which criteria?
- Putting job positions without a description
- Overcrowding your CV or résumé with skills, but without any experience that shows that you developed that skill.
- Putting your experiences randomly.
- Sending your CV or résumé without any contact detail (phone number, email or LinkedIn profile)
- Sending the same CV or résumé to different companies. It should be oriented towards the job description you are applying for.
Second, let's get into writing and for this we need to know what to mention whether for a CV or a résumé :
To begin, You’re going to write everything in chronological order or an anti-chronological order as you like. There are people who want to start with the last thing they have done, and others who start with the last things, it is up to you.
If you are a student, highlight your education first and then your professional experience.
Do's
- If you have a license, you put it with your baccalaureate degree.
- If you have a master's, you put it with your license, no baccalaureate degree.
- If you have a doctorate, you put them all.
- For the work experience, you put:
- Your position,
- Name of the company,
- Place,
- Start date and end date or Start date - Now (if you are still working there),
- Then your tasks:
- Other points to mention will be your volunteering experiences (Clubs, movements, certificates etc.)
Now let's get into how to design your CV or Resume :
As mentioned by the expert and Co-founder of Employability for Peace (E4P) Nourjahen Gara-Ali the following are the most recommended points to design your CV or résumé :
For French CV:
- You will have to put a photo,
- The length should be one page,
- You have to put your nationality,
- Your marital status,
- Your birthdate,
- Your driving license.
For the English CV:
- You don’t have to put a photo, it’s not recommended at all,
- The length could be from 1 to 5 pages,
- Don’t put your nationality, neither your marital status nor your birthdate,
- The driver’s license depends on the job position you are applying for. Check if the job description requires so.
➕ Bonus : let's make use of your CV and find opportunities !
