ARTICLE
This is an article from Wait but Why. It gives a powerful perspective on the length of our life (on average) by displaying the remaining time visually, in little blocks, by days, weeks, months, years.
It allows to step back for a moment from the immersion in daily life and activities we often get stuck into, and figure out that valuing the present moment, relationships, how we choose our priorities, and the quality of the time we spend is what matters, really.
A clip from a podcast episode of Jocko Podcast with dr. Jordan Peterson as the guest.
Motivation is not sourced from externally-oriented goals and directions. It comes from within. Each one of us is capable and in charge of figuring out our own motivation at an intrinsic level. This reminds me of internal locus of control (growth mindset vs fixed mindset).
Having a why and a direction which is intrinsically inspired in life seems to be the way to go. Dr. Peterson explains that it is very useful and relevant to lay out a plan, a 5 year plan taking into account what our life would be like in 5 years if all the things we aim at manifest themselves and what it would look like if, instead, the worst case scenario unfolds.
On the job side, this view teaches us that the goals of the corporation must be to a great extent compatible with our intrinsic motivation, or else the work we do will likely feel burdensome and draining. It also provides companies with a solid explanation of clearly having in mind a why, a vision, which is honest, transparent, clearly communicated to employees and the outside world. This reminds me of the book Start with Why by Simon Sinek.
"What blew me away when I have these students is I realize no one has ever sat them down, in their entire career in education, and said 'ok, who do you want to be? What sort of person is it that you want to be? not job; it's like, character; what do you want your life to be like? what should it be like, and what shouldn't it be like? And write about that seriously as if your life depends on it, because it does.' Why in the world isn't our education system set up to help people with that?"
A long-form conversation on many aspects, concepts, conundrums of the digital industry: SEO, writing and managing a blog, digital marketing, goals, life stability, and more.
An interesting watch for those keen on digital business, marketing, and all things crafting and mastering an online presence.
It is not events that concern people, it is their judgements concerning them.
