🧘 A Retreat for Your Mind - Stop Overthinking | Eckhart Tolle

There's an interesting part in this video I believe we may find useful to reflect on (from minute 10:30):

"At some future point you think I'm going to be liberated and free from all of that (burden of problems in life) and then I will start living! When you're 25 you still believe that; when you're 35 you say yeah that can still happen; then you're 45 and 50 and you think: ok, maybe I'll start living when I retire; and the you wait for retirement. And then when the first day of retirement comes you sit at home and say [confused expressions]: 'what now', 'who am i without my social function?'. And then you try golf. But your discontent is always there."

The takeaway from all this (quite hilarious) sketch is that living in the present moment, with awareness of the innate suffering that is part of the human condition, may be a less frustrating and burdensome way of navigating life.

At the same time, this may be interpreted as a manifesto to live life to its fullest and be grateful for our own existence, in the here and now, without being stuck in the past of being in the future with your mind.

Internalizing this mindset and approach to life may be liberating.

<aside> 🐘 Night Routine: a routine that helps you wind down and fall asleep smoothly.

</aside>

In this video, Thomas Frank provides 6 steps to creating a one hour pre-sleep routine, drawing from the established importance of having a good night sleep of 7 to 9 hours for adults. A night time routine is aimed at wrapping up all the activities of the day, relax the body, prime it to a calm environment and state. Here are the steps shown in the video:

#1 | FIGURE OUT WHAT TIME YOU SHOULD GO TO BED |

7 to 9 hours is ideal for adults. Keep in mind that REM cycles last 90 minutes.

#2 | CREATE A WIND DOWN ALARM |

#3 | MISE EN PLACE |

#4 | REVIEW & REFLECTION |

#5 | BRUSH YOUR TEETH |

#6 | RELAX |

🧠 Regression to the Mean | Pietro Boselli

We are biased creatures. The book Thinking, Fast And Slow by Daniel Kahneman is a great book on the topic of behavioral economics and how our mind works.

Regression to the Mean is a statistical effect according to which measurements that are extreme at one point are more likely to shift towards the mean.

Ignoring regression to the mean can, and does, often leads to erroneous interpretation of data or situations.

An iconic example of erroneous interpretation of this statistical effect Pietro illustrates in this video happens in the domain of sport when considering success:

"Success is a combination of luck and skill. Since our minds like to form causal stories, we tend to attribute results mainly to skill. The truth is that luck plays a big role too, and ignoring this fact means ignoring also regression effects. [...] If the performance of, say, a football player is extremely good on a match, chances are he/she won't play as well in the following performance (the performance will regress towards the mean level)."
