Project Overview

The Penny Lane Agency’s mission is to connect film production companies with location owners. On one side of the business, the agency helps location owners list their properties. On the other side, the agency helps production companies find places to film their movies. My team and I were brought on to build a website to help these production companies find their locations.

I played a role of interaction designer and technical consultant. I created the final clickable prototype together with my team, who supported with high reliable expertise of visual design. At the later phase, I turned this project into my personal project and developed.

In an already busy schedule, location scouts are burdened with a multi-stepped and time-consuming process of finding the perfect location for production companies. Our goal was to understand the main responsibilities of a location scout and simplify their process with a one-stop digital platform.

To begin, our team wanted to define what location scouting entails. We conducted 10 user interviews with filmmakers and location scouts to understand the responsibilities and frustrations of the current process. The following quotes best represented the reoccurring themes of our interviews.

Using our interviews, we storyboarded the main tasks of location scouting. By visualizing the process, we were able to see how multi-stepped and complex the current job is.

Key Insights

Using our storyboard and interviews, we recognized 3 key verbs that are essential to scouting: search, learn, and communicate. However, each key action adds complexity to an already time and labor-intensive process.
