Being generally more of a manga person than an anime person, despite reading all of Ranma ½ I’d never seen any of the anime, but after seeing bits and pieces of it that seemed neat over time, I realized it would probably be a lot of fun and checked it out. And yeah it’s a whole lot of fun!!! I was really blown away with how much I enjoyed it. It makes sense in retrospect that the manga would be really well suited for an anime, since it’s comprised exclusively of characters who move in distinctive ways and would be fun to draw and animate, but it really really works well, and I love the way that the animation enhances the personality of character quirks that were already dripping with personality, like Ranma’s signature walk on the fence. To log it, since there’s a clear split between the original run and the much much longer 熱闘編, this is just the first chunk. But I really got a kick out of it. I think the anime even improves on certain things, like in the manga Dr. Tofu never quite ends up as an interesting character and fades into the background along with Akane’s crush on him, but here there’s a whole new episode involving Tofu’s mom that I think is funny and makes it feel more like something substantive happened came out of the character. And I love the adaptations of stuff that is in the manga too, like the gymnastics battle (with a great great use of a ring announcer/sports commentator character). And I mean of course the gender swap premise is extra fun with double voice performances and color so the hair change is extra obvious. I was really impressed with how this adaptation captured and enhanced what’s fun about the original! I look forward to watching more.
