02-104學測英文定稿.pdf

  1. The book I will choose is EVERYONE IS BEAUTIFUL: Respect Others & Be Yourself. It seems to tell me how to make the best of myself. As for my advantages, it will guide me to discover them and draw on them. On the other hand, it will give me the spiritual support to face my own drawbacks, and teach me how to eradicate them. Furthermore, it will not only make me see myself more clearly, but it also help me to get along with others smoothly. That is, it will surely elaborate how to respect others, be it verbally or physically.

The reason why I choose this book is that I tend to have a radical mindset. I am inclined to be too self-conceited due to my advantage, dazzling grades. Thus, I despise my classmates for their incompetence in studying. However, none of human beings is a divine. I have some defects, too. For example, when it comes to singing, I am always out of tune, and the tempo is as hard to catch as a hare. Instead of admiring others and asking them for help, I started to let the surge of self-inferiority devour me. I do nothing but sob. Since I can’t truly accept myself, I similarly distort others, such as calling others names and sneering at them. Neither can I be myself, nor can I respect others. However, it is better late than never, and I am determined to change my terrible mindset. This book may be the mirror, in which I can find out my disadvantages. Also, this book may guide me to accept every aspect of myself. I will gradually conquer the fear to face my defects, and then eradicate them. It is likely that I may find it too hard to turn over a new leaf. However, as long as I follow the book step by step, I know I can hold on. After the torture-like baptism, I will find one thing: Every is beautiful in their own way. Studying is to me what singing is to my classmates. I shouldn’t look down on either my classmates or myself, for we have our respective sky to soar in. In turn, my classmates will see my change in attitudes towards others and feel my whole-hearted respect. For me, this book is stairs, which will lead to a whole new world, as I take them step by step.

  2. EVERYONE IS BEAUTIFUL: Respect Others & Be Yourself classmates, written by Caroline Strong, is definitely the book I would love to read, professor Strong has been doing her utmost to protect human rights as well as teaching the world how precious it is to be true to oneself. Since 1996, every book she published has inspired readers worldwide to cherish the uniqueness of every individual. As a huge fan of hers, I believe this book is not an exception. In fact, from the title “EVERYONE IS BEAUTIFUL.” I know this very book not only discusses the differences between one another, but conveys the idea that beauty is actually defined by ourselves instead of others. What’s more, she shows “how” to be beautiful, teaching us to respect others and be yourself. Perhaps she can give me some tips so that I can cope with my problems in school, or maybe she can grant me her attitude towards life so that I can learn to define my beauty myself. I firmly believe that professor Strong will again surprise me with her intelligence and creativity, and teach me even more about how to be myself in her new book.

This is the book I desire to read because for me, a senior in high school, it is rather difficult to find a balance between the world and my true self. There are nights when I wonder aimlessly in town with the wind chilling me to the bone. I feel like a phantom without a soul. The world seems to have engulf my soul and thus I can no longer find myself, let alone define my own beauty. Therefore, I believe professor Strong will once again lift me up from such mental turmoil, and lit up a candle in my heart. By reading this book, I am sure that I will no longer be lost in my longing to blend into the complicated world. As professor Strong puts it, “Everyone is beautiful,” I know she will guide me through my high school life and eventually help me discover my real inner beauty.

  3. Books have always been my best company during summer breaks. This summer, I would like to read “Everyone Is Beautiful” by Caroline Strong. According to its cover, I believe the book is focusing on two different aspects, respecting others and being oneself. The first part, respecting others, talks about the open-minded attitude towards other people. When we encounter different personalities, habits, or opinions, how should we react? This is a major question for the book to answer regarding the first aspect. The second part of the book teaches us how to love ourselves, embracing the advantages and shortages in us. Ways to avoid negative emotions such as jealousy and despair are the selling-points of this book.

My attraction to this book is based on two reasons. First, I believe mutual respect is the fundamental element of a peaceful and harmonic society. Recent events such as the Charlie Shooting in Paris and the protests in the USA both originated from to disrespect of other cultures. The tragedy of Charlie was a brutal retaliation from the long-discriminated Islamic people in France. Although the disrespecting cartoons didn’t justify the shooters’ actions, it questions the balance between freedom of speech and respect. Therefore, it is essential for world citizens to learn how to respect others in order to live as a family. The second reason I choose this book is because I want to learn how to fully embrace myself. There are always times when I feel depressed and wish I was born differently. However, I can’t change what is already gifted to me whether I like it or not. Judging by its title, I believe this book is exactly what I need. Only when I can freely be myself will I live a happy life. These are my two reasons for favoring this book. I can’t wait to embark on my journey of reading.

  4. I prefer reading the book “Everyone is Beautiful: Respect Others & Be Yourself.” In modern society, myriads of people put great emphasis on others’ appearances. Nonetheless, this superficial perspective toward life is growing more and more common in spite of the fact that almost everyone knows that we should never “judge a book by its cover.” As a result, it’s essential that this weird condition be changed. As far as I am concerned, I guess there would probably be some inspiring examples of confident people with gorgeous inner beauty rather than splendid exterior. Furthermore, the book may possibly contain a number of practical methods to build up one’s confidence and self-esteem. What’s more, learning to respect those with deficiencies is also vital for modern people. On the whole, it must be an impressive and thought-provoking book.

The world-known poet, Dante, once said, “Sail your own course and let people talk.” This is what I learned from Nick VuJucic, the most respectable idol of mine. Nick leads “a life without limbs;” however, he entitled his autography “Life without Limits.” As I browsed through his book, it surprisingly dawned on me that he was hardly confined by his lack of arms and legs and was capable of living his life to the fullest. No sooner had I witnessed his “ridiculously good life” than I realized that it was my own thought to myself that really counts. I am always making every effort to meet others’ expectations and I have little confidence in myself. This problem gets on my nerves all the time and makes me an extremely timid girl. I awfully desire being my true self without caring about others’ opinions; nevertheless, it takes a great amount of courage to do so. There are tens of thousands of extraordinary people who stand as my model. Take the famous singer, Lady Gaga, for instance. In her popular song, “Born this way,” she shows how she looks upon herself and expresses her true feeling directly. She is just the kind of person that I want to be! But as a matter of fact, I still dare not to do so since people around the world are not as open-minded as her, I don’t want to end up like the Phantom of the Opera, being isolated and sneered at. Consequently, I would like to read the book “Everyone is Beautiful” and find out whether I have the ability to be confident enough to be my true self or not!

  5. I would pick “Everyone is Beautiful: Respect Others & Be Yourself” as my summer reading assignment. According to the name of the book, I assume it’s about confidence and learning to accept others as they are. One would face problems in any relationship when he or she didn’t have self-esteem. Self-esteem, though as simple as it sounds, might be the toughest thing to grow in a person’s head. Yet when you lack of this element, you lost the respect toward yourself, and sometimes, toward others. Becoming cynical and lonesome on the edge of society is the last thing anyone wants, but no worries! The book just might show us ways to stop the blizzard and help us to love ourself the way we are, as well as other people.

As a kid, I was over-weight and shy. Being funny-looking to other kids wasn’t funny at all. I was bullied at school and was never the first pick to be on anyone’s team. I was the left-out. Gradually, though I refused to believe, the world seemed cold and ignorant. I was petrified of showing up at school just to be teased around by the kids with pretty faces. The situation lasted for years, I never made any friend due to the fact that I judged people as hard as I judged myself, due to the lack of self-esteem. Not until senior high school did I slim down and finally return to the bright side of the world. I learned how important it is to love yourself to be able to love others, despite a part of me still strives to believe this value. I hope to figure it all out while reading this book. I hope it brings me peace and remedy to my once-broken soul. “Everyone is beautiful,” I guess we’ll all read it to believe it!

  6. Of these two books, I prefer “Everyone is Beautiful: Respect Others & Be Yourself” written by Caroline Strong. Judging from the book title, it crosses my mind that its content might center on how we teenagers should build confidence, whether on the appearance or inside. I assume the author to be a psychologist, and thus she is making her utmost efforts to encourage those who don’t feel pretty about themselves and to teach those who taunt others for their faces or shapes to respect others. In addition, I guess that the author will add some real-life cases on the ground that the readers will better reflect to themselves, also adding stronger supports to her ideas.

The main reason for my choice is that I am not quite confident about my looks and I am constantly disturbed by the unfair judgements by others. Therefore, I would like to pick a book that could ease my stress and cheer me up. Other reasons about my decision are that I’ve read articles about leadership and that I don’t fear to stand up and be the head of a team. Above are the reasons why I decide to make Caroline’s book on my summer vacation reading list.

  7. I would choose Everyone is Beautiful: Respect Others and Be Yourself. It should be a book about mutual respect between people and being proud of who you are. Just as a classic cartoon theme song sings. “You think the only people who are people, are the people who look and think like you. But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, then you’ll find things you never knew.” Indeed, living in the era of globalization, everyone should learn the fact that everyone is beautiful and show respect to others. This book might teach us to break down the stereotypes in our mind, and appreciate the great variety of beauty in the world. On the other hand, being ourselves is also important. The book might as well teach us to admire the beauty within ourselves. As long as we learn our advantages and drawbacks, we can face the world with an open heart.

As one of the citizens in the globe, I should learn to respect people from different countries, and even people of different religions. Nowadays, traveling abroad is much easier than in ancient times. We have many chances to interact with people from all over the world. Showing respect is a great way to live in harmony with others. At the same time, being myself will let others know who I am, where I’m from, and what Taiwanese culture is like. Recently, the incident that ISIS members executing foreigners cruelly has horrified the world. If everyone had learned to respect others, the tragedy might not have happened. I must have the ability to respect others as I step into the multicultural society, and that is why I pick this book.

  8. My choice for summer reading would, without a doubt, be Austin Young’s Leadership is a Choice. As can be deducted from the title and the explanatory notes “Conquer Your Fear and You Can Be a Leader Too,” this book is obviously about facing phobias(恐懼症) and weaknesses to become a true leader. General McArthur wrote in his Prayer to His Son: “Build me a son, O Lord, who will strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid.” Young will offer tips and examples to achieve such a level of self recognition and clarity of mind, thus enabling the reader to brave his fears and weaknesses, and walk proudly forward on the path to leadership.

Never have I enjoyed the heavy responsibility that comes with leadership. Even less do I like the power of such a position. However, being a critical thinker and well organized, I am often propelled into becoming the leader of class events. To me, leadership is far from a choice, it is a burden that I loathe. If I even have the chance, I wriggle out of being a leader and am content to do just as I am told. Young puts leadership in a wholly different(完全不同的) light. He believes that leadership is a choice; a path that starts from conquering fears. I have been an unwilling leader, but have I ever been a true one, one who faces his fears? Have I not merely made lousy decisions and ordered others to do things? If I read Young’s book, I may glean the truth of leadership. My fear of responsibility originates from an illogical aversion of making mistakes. I should face the fact that everyone blunders. In this global age, entrepreneurship is on the rise. Anyone can become a CEO one day. It is a choice that every person can make, even me, whose intense terror of leadership obliterates all else. Because leadership is a choice, it is the choice to climb atop a high mountain to tread paths of fear yet still reach the summit. Everyone can complete this road, even I.

Thus spoke Albert Lippman of leadership: “The final test of a great leader is that he leaves behind him in other men the conviction to carry on.” Mayhap Young’s book is the first baby step towards such greatness: greatness that every person with true courage may achieve.

  9. I’d definitely go with the book Leadership is a Choice: Conquer Your Fear & You Can Be a Leader Too. My guess is that the book is divided into two sections: “how to conquer fears” and “examples of leaders.” In the first section, the author illustrates ways to make one more courageous and display one’s charisma, such as actively participating in extracurricular activities and ceaselessly expanding one’s social circle. In section two, the author renders the readers more insights into what it’s like to be a leader by bringing up some of the greatest entrepreneurs in the industry. Apple’s founder Steve Jobs, Microsoft’s CEO Bill Gates, Facebook’s creator Mark Zuckerburg, and Amazon’s chairperson Jeff Bezos are undoubtedly included in this section.

There are an assorted array of reasons why I chose the book, one of which is that the leaders I listed above are all idols I’ve been trying to emulate. Thus, to this end I’ve been serving as a club officer in a volunteer club, scheduling and leading mission trips for one and a half year. I also took part in several internships, aiming to train myself to be the one that serves before morphing into the one that leads. With that said, this book would help me comprehend the word “leadership” better and really get me acquainted with those prominent leaders of today. To conclude, I’d like to address that for as long as I can remember, I’ve been craving to become a leader, a navigator that directs the whole crew of people, and I believe that under the auspices of this book by Austin Young, I’d eventually fulfill my aspiration someday in the future.

  10. If I have enough time, I would rather choose to read both of the two books. But if I could only choose one book, I would prefer the latter one, Leadership Is A Choice. Judging from its cover, there is a guy already coming through some stairs and climbing a ladder. Obviously, it shows that if we understand the topics mentioned in the book, we could get a better position, fulfill our dreams or something like that. Judging from its title, it would definitely discuss about the leadership, an ability that successful ones need to have. I think there will be numerous short stories in it, giving readers some examples who have conquered their fears and become leaders. Perhaps there will be some comments given by the author after the story, pointing out which is the key point that contribute to their success. Maybe the author even put his email in the book, hoping readers to contact him and talk about individual obstacles they have met. At the end of the book, the author must offer a simple quiz to see if the readers understand what he has mentioned in the book and make appropriate decision when facing different difficulties.

The reason why I choose this book is apparent, leadership is such an extremely important capability that a successful businessman would have. Sadly, in most common education, there isn’t any class given to teach students to learn the ability. To make the matters worse, we, the Taiwanese, tend to be less aggressive when comparing to the westerners. We are as ambitious as them, but when it’s about the time to elect a leader, we always shy away and don’t grab the opportunity. In my opinion, the way to overcome the fears in our mind is the key to the problem, and it’s what we are going to learn in this book. But after being selected as a chairperson, leaderships is no less important than bravery. Fortunately, it’s also a topic that the book will let us know. Because I can become courageous and gain leadership by reading the latter book, I would choose Leadership Is A Choice as the book to read in my summer vacation.

  11. I will doubtlessly choose “LEADERSHIP Is A CHOICE: Conquer Your Fears & You Can Be a Leader Too” as my extra reading in summer vacation. The book may introduce what traits a brilliant leader should have and how to achieve the goal of being a good leader. Besides, it may also mention the importance of teamwork, since if there is not a cooperative group, there is not a leader. Moreover, it will tell me how to conquer my fears, obstacles, and frustration that I will have to face if I make up my mind to be a great leader. To sum up, the book must be worth reading due to the three inspiring themes(主題、主旨) mentioned above.

The reason why I would like to read a book regarding leadership is also the reason why I expect myself to be a nice leader. I am convinced that a world full of responsibility and sincerity is undoubtedly better than a world made up of lies and hatred. The world we live in is not yet perfect, so there must be people who pursue a better world. However, everyone has his own dream. Therefore, a competent leader who is courageous, unfrightened, and fair is necessary in order to assemble people to fight for a common goal. Take Gandhi of India for example. The originally-colonized Indian inspired by him protested in peace for their liberty, and they succeeded. It’s why a leader is significant. But nobody is born flawless. Leadership is a choice more than a gift. The book will tell me how to become a good leader, how to work with others and how to fulfill my dream of bettering the world. With the help of this book, I will be doubtlessly on the right way which leads to a promising future.

  12. Among the books which are recommended by school, I would like to read Leadership Is A Choice which is written by Austin Young. The book may contain three parts. First of all, for individual, it will teach me how to cultivate the ability of dealing with crises. While leading a group, it is very likely to face some urgent situations. How to stay calm and solve the worsening situation is a significant lesson which should be learned by all leaders. Second, for groups, the book will teach me how to communicate and interact with others properly. In the modern society, cooperation plays an important role in all groups on the ground that two heads are better than one. As a result, how to compile all information and opinions from teammates and make an appropriate decision appears so important to a good leader. Third, the book should also contain how to encourage others and cheer my group up. After all, the efficiency of a group can’t be overemphasized, and the key to leading an efficient group lies in convincing and inspiring words.

If my memory serves me right, this incident took place when I was chosed as a club leader one year ago, and it etched in my mind. When I had to declared some information on the stage, I found that I had a stage fright. When I assigned jobs to my teammates, they didn’t pay attention to what I had said. When I tried to share my viewpoints with them, it would eventually give rise to an endless argument. Not surprisingly, the club which I led didn’t have a good performance in the end of the semester, and this drove me sorrowful. It seemed that I fell into a bottomless abyss of despair. Even though the incident came to an end, the memory will still linger on. Based on this reason, I make up my mind to become a true leader. How to conquer my fears and those challenges is the first thing I need to do. As a result, I will choose Leadership Is A Choice, hoping to find a correct avenue to cultivate leadership and become a successful leader.

  13. Given the choice, I would choose to read Austin Young’s “Leadership is a Choice.” As we are all well aware of, being the leader of a certain group of people can be quite challenging. Judging by its cover and subtitle “Conquer you fears and you can be a leader too”, this book is probably about how we could overcome the various obstacles on the way to becoming a successful and effective leader. Like most things in life, the real barrier blocking us lies deep inside our minds, and heading a team is no exception. We may dread(害怕) the thought of shouldering all the responsibilities, fear to demand more of your subordinates, and even run away from the fact that you’ll have to constantly step onstage to announce and command. Therefore, I believe this book will go through all the possible ways to remove the barriers of fear in our hearts. It would probably illustrate the points more clearly by showcasing stories of successful leaders and how they manage to break through their fears. It would explain to us that there is a leader inside everyone, and all you have to do to reveal it is to get ahead of your dreads.

As for the reason why I would choose this book, I believe I still lack some of the traits to becoming a successful leader. Too often when I am appointed to head a class project, I would feel the butterflies in my stomach and my legs would tremble uncontrollably, for I take myself incapable of being a nice classmate and a power leader at the same time. As a result, I sincerely hope that this book could enlighten me and conquer the worries constantly murmuring in my brain. Only by doing so can I stand a confident person onstage and smoothly lead my team forward. And as shown on the cover, a man climbing a ladder upwards, I plan to go through this book and learn to turn the various fears and obstacles into stepping stones to a better leadership.

  14. Choosing from the two books, I would like to go for Austin Young’s “LEADERSHIP IS A CHOICE: Conquer Your Fears & You Can Be a Leader Too.” From its book title, I can tell that this book probably deals with effective ways to help a timid person to transform into an outstanding leader. The author may have also lacked confidence in the past, so he wrote the book to share his experience of how he changed himself, conquered his fears of speaking to the public to talking on a leader’s responsibilities, and finally became a successful leader. His intention was to tell those who are lacking in confidence that believing in themselves is not that difficult and everyone can eventually make it if they follow the tips provided in the book.

As a person who seldom takes part in extracurricular activities, I am not good at socializing with others and leading a group is often the last thing I would like to do. When interacting with others, I am also worried whether I have uttered something appropriate that may upset them. Because of my poor socializing skills, I always avoid being a leader of one group lest I ruin the friendly atmosphere due to my improper act. All I want to do is to stay in my comfort zone and finish the work I am assigned to. However, I know well that it is impossible for me to be like this in the future. Once I enter the work market after my college graduation, I will be forced to face the challenges from other competitors. Without the ability to lead a group well, I will not stand a chance of prevailing other people. Therefore, I would like to opt for Austin Young’s book to help myself surmount my fear of socializing and develop the capability of being a successful leader. Through following the author’s instructions, I hope that I can be more at ease when interacting with people and no longer run away from the responsibility that a leader shoulders.

  15. If I were to select a book for summer break, I would choose “Leadership is a Choice” , by Austin Young. I believe, from the front cover, that the book is set out to foster and cultivate the next generation of leaders. And from the indications mentioned, I would think that the book will start out with listing possible hampers one is likely to encounter during his or her journey to become a leader. Following with suggesting ways to nullify those fears and presenting methods to overcome the obstructs faced. The book is also likely to act as a step by step handbook to becoming a leader by showing requirements and steps to become one. Perhaps it also includes examples of prominent and renown leaders with their life stories. All in all, the content seems intriguing to me.

Reasons of my choosing “Leadership is a Choice” can be divided into two. First of all, my personality and character traits. I always had the urge to handle or breakdown an incident first hand, and my courageous, bold, but pliable nature can be suitable in either accomplishing knotty decision making moments or alleviating damage done. I consider a position of leader somewhat challenging, but I am also eager to engage in a more intensive learning of it, by consulting to the book of course. Secondly, I believe my previous experiences enable me to better relate to the topic, for the fact that I took part in various leadership camps and conventions, inclusive of one visiting Israel. With my processed knowledge, contents about leadership will less likely to complicate and obfuscate me. Furthermore, the experience and proficiency I hold will only contribute to accelerating the learning process and guide me through the book more swiftly. Despite my strengths, I still am aware of my debility such as being clumsy and too tentative. Recognizing the book as a supplement towards my complete personality and a tool to achieve success, I would like to read “Leadership is a Choice” with all my heart.
