1. Paid time off

<aside> ☀️ To ensure sufficient time off, everyone is expected to take at least 20 workdays per year of paid time off (PTO) with an expected average of 25-30 workdays off per year. If you manage people, make sure to check on this quarterly. This Metabase report gives you visibility of time off taken by teams (link is accessible by Remoters only).

It's important that you are healthy and happy. At Remote, your health and the health of your loved ones come before work. For this reason, you have unlimited PTO from your start date.

Bereavement does not fall under general PTO, kindly communicate (if you can under the circumstances) that you will be taking time off to your manager immediately, to ensure you get the necessary support immediately. When you return from work, please record it on the platform.

PTO is when you will be away from your desk for 4 or more hours. You don't need to use PTO for things like household chores, personal errands, etc if it’s an hour or two away from work. What's important is good planning and communication with your team and manager. If you are going to be away for a few hours, please update internal apps (eg. Slack and Google calendar) on how long you’re likely to be away. We don’t want to be “big brother” but over communication is kind and helpful to colleagues. No one should be expected to work during their time off, its important to intentionally disconnect from all work and by creating a good hand-over plan, it won’t be necessary to work.

<aside> 📌 Our unlimited PTO policy goes above and beyond the statutory and compliance minimums in each country. For this reason, we do not pay out unused time off unless local jurisdiction requires us to do so.

Paid Time Off Planning & Approval

Remote has a flexible work environment and we expect all Remoters to lean into Care and Transparency to align on days off. This means:

  1. Creating early awareness with your manager.

  2. Obtaining Manager Approval (where PTO is 5 or more consecutive work days)

  3. Early communication and coordination with your team to help ensure that we continue to provide excellent service to our stakeholders and meet our ambitious business goals.

  4. If you are away for 5 or more consecutive days you are expected to create a handover note (Handover Template) for your Manager and Team. If your team or department already uses a handover template, please continue using that one.

  5. Provide full visibility of your time off to the whole organisation.

  6. All PTO should be logged in the Remote platform, regardless of length

As a best practice we aim for each Remoter to take an average of 25-30 workdays off per year, recommended to be spread out throughout the entire year.

Responsibility of Managers

As a manager and leader of your team, it is your responsibility to ensure appropriate coverage. This does not take away from team members responsibilities on proactively communicating their time off, but it does mean that it is your responsibility, as the manager, to ensure little to no disruption of work is experienced, even during busy time off periods. Proactively look forward and consider your team’s upcoming time off, where there may be overlap. When you receive a request consider what coverage will be available. And prompt your team to add in their time off requests early (this is a great reminder to do at the start of each quarter).
