About AI Playground

AI Playground applies the philosophy of Anji Play to AI. In this program, hosting artist talks, hands-on workshops, and collating guides from our learnings, we explore AI tools in an unstructured manner with a focus on friendship over competition**, messiness** over perfection, process over completion, reflections over portfolio building.

Intro

Curated together by Nadia Piet & @computational_mama, this season included four modules that explore the use of AI to create image-based; text-based; pose-based; and sound-based art. Each module exists of 3 parts:

Talk // Deep (ML) Diving w/ Whales for Climate

https://youtu.be/wLh9po9lNyA

Whales for Climate Change – the team shining a light on the Climate Crisis using generative image-making tools – led a candid behind-the-scenes talk about their journey from concept to execution of their Whales Tales Project, including the nitty-gritty of using AI, ML and Generative Adversarial Networks for image-making.

AIxDesign on Instagram: "Nikita from the Whales for Climate team talks about how she had to step back and 'give the AI a freehand to sort of weave it's own narrative' so that the story book could fall into place and come together ☀️ 🐳 In this behind-the-screens talk, we invited the team to share the process behind this project, from the conceptual phase and motivation to the nitty-gritty of using AI, ML and Generative Adversarial Networks for image-making. It was a great opportunity to learn how narrative-building and visuals can help to shine the light on the ongoing environmental crisis and educate about marine life 🐋 🐙 🐠 Whales For Climate also invited us to try out the tools they used, diving together into hands-on exploration of image-making with GANs 🎨 The full recording is on our Youtube for you to watch at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLh9po9lNyA! ☀️ 🐳 Stay tuned for upcoming AI Playground events - led by computational mama, generously supported by Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie. #AIxDesign #WhalesForClimate #aimeetsdesign #AIPlayground #ecologyofbeing #generativeimagemaking #storytellingwithai"

Workshop // AI-generated images with Aarati Akkapeddi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjjlC-3AzLo&t=78s

Interdisciplinary artist Aarati Akkapeddi uses AI to explore the themes of family, memory and childhood. During this workshop, Aarati took us on an immersive deep-dive into working with AI and ML in combination with our own personal images to reflect on the old and new memories that emerge.

AIxDesign on Instagram: "During the Good Old D(AI)s) workshop led by interdisciplinary artist Aarati Akkapeddi / @memory__work we explored how to make new visuals out of our personal image archives 👩‍👩‍👦 How fun reconnecting with our imaginary ancestors and relatives - 'Look, that's me!' - and creating images that combine familiar and new at the same time 📸 Have a look at what @sinem.gorucu made during the workshop and stay tuned for more events ⏭ The worksop is a part of AI Playground - an event series where we explore creative uses of AI & ML tools in a playful way 🪀 AI Playground is led by computational mama and generously supported by Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie #AIxDesign #GoodOldD(AI)s #aimeetsdesign #AIPlayground #visualstorytelling #generativeimagemaking #storytellingwithai"

AIxD’s Guide to: AI x [Moving] Image

Humans have always made images, driven by a need to preserve memories and tell stories. Yet, with each image-making innovation – like photography and video – we are forced us to rethink how we make and use images. The emergence of AI and ML tools invites us again to re-imagine our role as both image-makers and image-consumers. In this guide, we share our findings, resources, and community reflections from our program: AI Playground / Image.

From synthetic media in photography to auto-editing video, we'll look at how new AI and ML tools are impacting image-making. We’ll reflect on how these new tools can be misused and what we can do about it.
