Basic level

Some basic rules can help you easily improve your security and that of your data when browsing the internet.

• Use an up-to-date browser

  Remember to always update your browser (Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, etc.): these updates are essential so that potential security vulnerabilities are not exploited to retrieve your data. If possible, we recommend enabling automatic updates for optimal protection without having to think about it.

• Browse in "private" mode

  All web browsers have an "incognito" or "private" mode. Its main advantage is not to record the browsing history on your device. The second advantage is to limit the sending of information to the websites you visit. If possible, activate automatic opening in private browsing in your browser settings or as soon as you browse the internet.

  Also note that browsing the internet privately has an additional benefit: some unscrupulous sites use "cookies" to adjust their prices to your browsing behavior.

  A cookie is a file that is deposited by your browser on your computer when you browse the internet. This file records personal information about you, such as age, your username on a website, or consumption habits. This information is then collected and analyzed to improve your browsing, but above all to offer you targeted advertisements based on your profile. Browsing the internet in private mode prevents these files from being stored when you close the browser.

• Configure your browser to indicate that you refuse to be tracked

  Some browsers offer an option to indicate to websites that you refuse to allow information related to your internet browsing to be used. Commercial sites often use this data to offer you commercial offers.

  Depending on the browser you are using, the process to activate this option will not be the same.

  • If you are using KARMA (on Mobile): go to options, then to the "Privacy" tab. Then check the box "Tell sites that I do not want to be tracked". Also uncheck the box "Accept cookies" and check "Clear history when KARMA is closed".
  • If you are using Mozilla Firefox: go to options, then to the "Privacy" tab. Then check the box "Tell sites that I do not want to be tracked". Also uncheck the box "Accept cookies" and check "Clear history when Firefox is closed".
  • With Google Chrome: in settings, go to the "Privacy" section, then check the box "Tell sites that I do not want to be tracked" and click "OK".
  • Microsoft Edge: in Options (via the "..." icon in the top right), click on "Show advanced settings" then activate "Send Do Not Track requests".

• Regularly delete your browsing data

  If you do not use the "private" or "incognito" mode of your browser, we recommend that you regularly delete cookies, temporary files, and your browsing history manually:

  • You use Mozilla Firefox: to delete cookies, browsing history or navigation files, click on "History" then on "Clear recent history". Choose "Cookies", "Cache" and "Browsing and download history" then delete them.
  • You use Google Chrome: click on the icon, then on "More tools" and "Clear browsing data". At the top of the page, choose a period. To delete everything, select "All periods". Check the boxes next to "Cookies and site data" and "Cached images and files". Click on "Clear data".
  • You use Microsoft Edge: In the Microsoft Edge browser, click on the "..." button in the upper right. Click on Settings; In Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear. Check the box Cookies and saved website data then select Clear.
  • You use Safari: choose Safari, then Preferences, click on Privacy, then click on Manage Website Data, select one or more websites, then click on Remove or Clear All.

  

• Limit the data you share

  It may seem obvious, but always be vigilant about what you do on the internet. Avoid sharing your personal data (email address, phone number, identity, etc.) even on sites you are used to, or during exchanges with people you know.

  Another good practice is to check the address behind a link before clicking on it. To do this, move the pointer of your mouse over the link without clicking: you will see the address of the website appear at the bottom of your navigation page (see image below). The end of this address should always be strictly identical to the expected brand name. Also, check that the website address starts with "https://" as on KARMA.
