Motivation

On the last MUI Core’s Retrospective related to the OKRs of Q2, we kicked off a discussion for the problems we have around defining key results & targets. The main problems were:

How are we going to solve this?

Following 2022 & 2023 company set goals, this document will propose a yearly OKR for MUI Core in the span of 1st of July 2022 → 30th of June 2023. If we decide that it is easier to track the metrics & key results per calendar year, we can adjust the OKR at the beginning of 2023 and create an OKR for 2023.

Increase the React market share

Our company objective as stated in the Direction is: “Aim to empower 30M people a year to build custom UIs, faster by 2030.” The way MUI Core can contribute to this is naturally by increasing the number of developers using the products we build. Moreover, as we aim to go above 50% of the market adoption of React, we should start to measure this and have a yearly target that can help us track if we are on the right path.

These are the numbers that represent the market share of React we had in the last few years:

Define the Key Result

If you notice the trend of the growth of the market share so far, it is positive and growing each year, but the pace of the growth is decreasing a bit every year, going from 4.43% in 2020 to 3.01% in 2022. It’s important that we keep track of this and make sure that this trend doesn’t continue trough out the years, or at least keep it above a borderline in order to get to the target we have for 2030. If we aim to have above 50% of the React market share by 2030, we can aim for getting to 50% of the market share by July 2028, which would give us a chance to grow above 50% in the year after that. This means that on average we should increase the market share by 4.43% each year. We can start by setting 5% as our target for July 2023.
