In this era, people and their goods are connected by vast advancements in technology, these improvements breed a more efficient society and therefore a better world. Despite these advancements we face ever greater environmental challenges. In response, farmers are turning to crop production methods that are more sustainable than traditional farming, hydroponics and vertical farming. However, Aquaponics appears to be one of the most promising of these methods. This textbook is an introductory guide to aquaponics that will show you how to install your own Aquaponics system.

(2) About Aquaponics

Aquaponics is a new food production system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics in closed loop in which nutrients are circulated. Decomposing fish waste and food leftovers provide nutrients for plants, the nutrients are then absorbed by the roots and the now filtered water returns to the fish tank. We call this ecosystem "Earth work".

(2) A space with Aquaponics

We predict that the existence of aquaponics will change the relationship between human beings and their environment. Although aquaponics isn’t as established as traditional farming techniques, it certainly has a future. We hope that aquaponics can provide a new form of interaction between humans and their environments. I would like to discuss some use cases of aquaponics that have this effect.

About babylon

The first aquaponics work was installed at the entrance of 100 BANCH, a co-working space based in Shibuya, Tokyo. As the installation space is the place that welcomes visitors, it was designed as a face of the facility and for inducing the starting point of communication. In this space where various people go around, this aquaponics played a role of healing not only visitors but also entrepreneurs working at this place. believe it contributes to alleviating psychological tension.

We placed five acrylic tanks on a foundation of reinforced cardboard. We then assigned each tank one of the following roles: bio-filter, plant grow bed, deep water culture system and reservoir tank. Lastly, each tank was connected with PVC pipes.

The biggest challenge here was controlling the water quality and quantity. We spent a lot of time ensuring there was enough water for the microbes to thrive and decompose the organic matter from the fish as expected. Many elements of the system require careful observation and understanding. We repeatedly adjusted and tested these factors in order to ensure a healthy and sustainable system.
