Over the past few months I’ve been rethinking how NewTunes works, and I’m excited to share some changes with you.

What’s New

• No more account data stored: The old version of NewTunes saved your listening stats in a database so you could track changes over time. With this update, everything runs directly in your browser. Nothing is stored on the servers.
• Simpler backend: The backend now exists only to talk to the Spotify API on your behalf. Your stats are pulled live each time you sign in.
• Open source: NewTunes is now open source! You can check out the full codebase here: github.com/makandz/myspotify. Feel free to explore, contribute, or fork it for your own projects.

Why This Change?

The old approach required managing and storing data for everyone using the app. While that gave the ability to compare stats over time, it also added complexity and responsibilities around storage.

By moving everything into the browser, I can keep the experience lightweight, private, and easier to maintain.

What About the Future?

Right now, NewTunes is focused on giving you a clean, quick way to view your top artists and tracks. I might revisit database features later if people miss them, but for now this setup keeps things simple and privacy-friendly.
