A website that lists jobs in innovation, startups and tech companies, that are suitable for generalists, i.e. people whose careers don’t fit into neat career categories (such as engineering, product, design, sales, marketing, and talent).
At the start of 2022 I lost my job. I’d been working with startups for 3.5 years so I knew the ecosystem well, and knew where startup jobs were advertised. But the startup job listings were listed by specialisation: designer, product manager, engineer, marketing, sales, talent. If you don’t fit these categories you have to scroll the entire site searching for non-specialist job titles in the cracks.
I was also trawling LinkedIn and other careers sites looking for jobs, searching for keywords like startup, innovation, entrepreneurship, program management, operations, chief of staff. But there was a lot of noise here, with a search for “innovation” turning up a hundred Business Analyst positions for every relevant “innovation manager” role.
I realised: I’m an insider, and I’m struggling to find the jobs relevant to me. How must it feel to be an outsider looking for your first startup job?
This site is my way of opening the door.
Others have built similar gateways into startups or specific areas of tech.
“Absolutely needed. I’m not sure how I could have succeeded in a startup / innovation role without being a generalist. Organisations absolutely need generalists to be the “glue” connecting different parts of the business. I feel the trend towards having an innovation function is just generalists trying to carve out a niche for ourselves outside the traditional silos.” LinkedIn comment
“One of my clients calls me a "Swiss Army knife" but I guess Generalist is more professional :-)” LinkedIn comment
“This is a great initiative! So many people in my network that are incredible smart, passionate and self-motivated, extremely fast learners and amazing with people - but have chosen breadth over depth.” Twitter reply
