Be like a complied language instead of interpreted language. Execute a process one, don't repeat it.
Perfectionism is often overkill and a real time waster
It takes 21 days of doing a new behavior to develop it to a habit
Time management principles
mutual interruption shield: each SE handles interruptions in period of time, and the rest will work on their own.
setup tier interruption: tier 1 (customer-facing, junior, 80%), tier 2 (hard issues, senior, 20%)
There are 6 main principles:
- One “database” for time management information (use one organizer).
- Use one tool to managing all (to do lists, calendar, life goals, ...)
- Conserve your brain power for what’s important (conserve RAM).
- Getting tasks, instructions and knowledge out of your brain and onto paper
- Develop routines and stick with them(reuse code libraries; don’t re in-vent the wheel).
- Don't spend a lot of time managing all the time management techniques
- Develop habits and mantras (replace runtime calculations with pre-computed decisions).
- Sooner better than later
- Always fill my gas tank on every Sunday
- Trust the process
- Always spend 5 mins in every morning to plan your day (your mind will be filled with full of positive thoughts)
- Maintain focus during “project time” (be like a kernel semaphore).
- When you are in "project time", stay focus 100%, do it as quick as you can
- Manage your social life with the same tools you use for your work life
(social life isn’t an optional feature).
Focus versus Interruptions
- Always verify the previous steps before doing the next steps
- The price of interruptions = t + p + s
- t: time to handle interruptions
- p: time to figure out where you left off
- s: time to recover m
- When doing a task, focusing 100% on the current task
- Easy to sleep/ to calm down when getting angry or worried: When something is keeping you awake, write it down and try falling asleep again (Keep a pad of paper and a pen next to your bed)
