한글 (the Korean Alphabet)은 조선왕조 제4대 임금인 세종대왕이 1443년엔 창제하여 1446년에 반포하였습니다. 한글 창제 이전에는 중국 한자의 뜻과 음을 사용하여 한국어를 나타냈는데 한자를 모르는 일반 백성들은 자신의 생각을 글로 표현할 수 없었습니다. 그래서 세종대왕은 백성들이 널리 사용할 수 있도록 쉬운 문자를 만들었고, 그것이 바로 한글입니다.

The Korean Alphabet(Hangeul) was created in 1443 by King Sejong, the 4th King of the Joseon Dynasty, and proclaimed in 1446. Before the creation of Hangeul, the meaning and sounds of Korean were borrowed from Chinese characters. However, commoners who could not read Chinese characters were unable to express their thoughts in writing. Therefore, King Sejong created a simple writing system that could be used widely.

한글은 모음자 10개, 자음자 14개로 이루어져 있으며 이것을 사용하여 19개의 자음과 21개의 모음을 쓰고 읽을 수 있습니다.  한글의 자음이 우리의 발성기관의 모양을 본떠서 만들어졌다는 점이나 유사한 소리를 가진 글자들을 그룹지어 비슷한 모양으로 만들었다는 점 등에서 알 수 있듯이, 한글은 과학적인 원리에 따라 창제되었습니다.  그에 따라 한글을 배우기가 아주 쉬웠고 백성들이 빠르게 익힐 수 있었습니다.

Hangul consists of 10 vowels and 14 consonants, and you can write and read 19 consonants and  21 vowels using them.  Hangeul was created according to scientific principles. Hangul consonants are modeled after the shape of our vocal organs or similar sounds. Also  the letters they have were grouped into similar shapes. As a result, it was very easy to learn Hangul and the people could learn it quickly.
