Penn Labs is a team of student engineers, designers, and business developers. We build products that improve life at Penn for tens of thousands of students each semester. As part of the Penn Courses team, I work closely with developers to design products that streamline course registration.

Penn Course Alert is a product that allows students to register for immediate alerts via email or text when full courses open up. Thousands of students rely on PCA each semester to get the in-demand courses they want.

As the product designer for this project, I was responsible for establishing entry points and designing interactions for two new features: alert management and course open/close history.

The Problem

Penn Course Alert’s functionality is simple: users can sign up for a one-time alert that notifies them when full courses open up.

However, courses open and close fairly quickly, so there’s a good chance that they won’t register in time after receiving the first alert. When this happens, users had to go back to the Penn Course Alert site from the text/email and resubscribe to the alert. There was no system for setting up and canceling recurring alerts.

Additionally, there was no way to assess the level of demand for any given course, since course open/close history was not displayed.
