Project week07: Hiromi Sato

This month, we have seen billionaires' short space trips repeatedly. Even if it was just a hobby for Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson, these trips exhibited the progress of space exploration by the private sector. And there is one other company we should keep our eyes on. SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, is leading the race to space. It is not listed but already has $74 billion valuations.

We usually call private companies which mark more than $10 billion in valuations "decacorns," such as SpaceX. Those worth over $1 billion are "unicorns." According to CB Insights, as of July 22, there were 765 unicorns, including 34 decacorns in the world. With the easing of monetary policy, investment in promising groups has become more active.

So, who are decacorns or unicorns? where are they living? I analyzed the dataset obtained from CB Insights and illustrated some graphs to reveal "the unicorn club". Let's see.πŸ‘€

This map shows where decacorns live. Many decacorns, including Stripe and Robinhood, gather on the West Coast in the US, especially San Francisco and its suburb called "Silicon Valley." On the other hand, we can see the largest circle in China. It is Bytedance, known as a parent company of "TikTok." Its valuation marks $140 billion.

This is a table that shows the company's ranking by valuation. As we see on a map, the US and China lead this race. I calculated "Unicorn Age", which means how long has taken after joining the unicorn club. We can see the rapid growth of the Bytedance in valuation. ( Oh, I'm surprised that Canva is not the US but an Australian company! )

Now, we move to look at the entire unicorn club. This chart shows the number of unicorns as of July 22, 2021, and July 1, 2020. In the US, more than 160 new unicorns were born past one year. γ€€It shows that investors prefer "promising tech companies" under COVID-19 uncertainty. Some companies accelerated their growth in the wave of digital transformation.
